Electric S-10

Just saw this, close to me, NMNA, but thought it was cool enough to share.

Top Gear US had an electric S10 featured last season. Pretty cool build.

OF COURSE it's in Georgia. Where else would it be?

To clarify, this S10 Electric setup is the exact same powertrain I used in the front of my $2009 Fiero AWD hybrid. I'd love to have it, but unfortunately it would cost as much to ship it here as it would to buy. If somebody here gets this, please know that there's tons of info on how to bring them back to life out there (cult following!). I also know a thing or two about bastardizing the powertrain for a fun powertrain swap if somebody wants to do that too.

I was just gonna say... S10 electric? Didn't Nascho have some of one of these at one point?

Isn't that the EV-1 FWD drive train hooked up to a deDion axle in the rear? Perfect set up for engine swappability.

If anyone needs help with this, I am local, and willing to store if needed for a future pick-up. This is about 4 miles from my office, so wouldn't be an issue.

I want this very badly. Nashco, how much money do you guess it would take to get it running again? What would it cost to get it back onto the street?

Absolute best case, it ONLY needs batteries. Wishful thinking, but let's pretend. 26 new lead acid batteries would be about $3,000. Of course, machines don't like to sit, so assume it'll need some TLC from sitting. Furthermore, many times the trucks have a problem that caused them to get parked in the first time that may not have been the battery health, so it's Pandora's box at that point.

So, as a restoration/tinker project they get pricy quick and require special knowledge. I really like them, but they're money pits to get back on the road and keep on the road compared to new EVs, so it takes a "special" person to appreciate them. However, they're one of the most simple EVs compared to new stuff, so easier to tinker with due to dumb electronics and very little safety stuff to screw you up like ABS, traction control, airbags, etc.

I wonder if these are the systems that dampened the idea of hybrid and electric vehicles in the early 2000s. If it is, they only achieved 40 or so miles per charge. It is still worth fixing up.

What kind of range could one expect from this? And how difficult would it be to swap in a pack or two from a Prius into it?

A pair of Prius packs would only get you a couple miles of range; my Fiero hybrid used 3 Prius packs which was enough for about three miles but couldn't put out peak power for very long. With fresh lead batteries you can get about 60 miles out of them if you baby it.
