It's just a ZX2 with a factory fart cannon and rear brakes that fail even more often than the Lucas drums.

... and Tokico dampers, Eibach springs, Energy Suspension poly bushings, a more aggressive tune, better intake, Centerforce Clutch, B&M shifter, and better seats...

And how much of that is probably still there/good after 200k miles of being beaten the berkeley out of? I rest my case.

I did log in to the same GRM forums that get moist over Neon ACRs, right?

SWONE,
while your point is well taken, it seems that the difference between the Neon and the ZX2 is that Mopar acknowledged right away that they had "a runner" on their hands, while Ford took a half-hearted approach with the ZX2.
I'm more surprised that the comments are so negative after the article in current issue of GRM pain the ZX2 as a fairly decent car....not outstanding, but decent.

They pretty much took the same approach. The only real difference is that there wasn't a racing series built around the Escort.
If anything, the modification package on the S/R was more comprehensive than what was offered on the ACR.
Did it make the S/R the better or faster car? Not in my opinion, much as i'll stick up for the S/R, but pretty much all the things that make the ACR so great are worn out after 10 years, too. (While the S/R will still have the springs, ECU, shifter, and intake, because those aren't really wear items.)
I'd take a 1st gen Neon ACR any day over an S/R, just seemed funny to me at the time that i'd see a post like that on this particular forum.
I didn't mean to go real deep with it.
Trust me on this one. I own one and restored it. It was the best money i spent. The S/R give the performace of the new FIAT Abarth with the gas mileage of the base model 500. And a huge trunk for track day stuff...The Yellow is REALLY YELLOW...lol

I don't think an Escort is less embarrassing than a Neon.

Some would say it's more embarrassing.
I know I'M embarrassed.

I'm not the type to be embarrassed by a car, but if I was, well, y'know. Escort.

I like ZX2s. My enthusiasm for them got two of my friends to plunk down their money on one (well, two). The S/R isn't anything really special, though.

FTFY, I wouldn't go anywhere in public if I were forced to drive a neon.....

FTFY... or rather, made it make just as much sense as your earlier statement...
