Looks decent in the pictures, some new parts including a new turbo and exhaust. $2,500.

Too pricey for this thread...

Lol yes I know, but barely. Especially it's condition judging by the photo and new parts. There was another, newer turbo Daytona in the area but they want over $5k for it

$2500 isn't too much, its still within the "recoup" range of the challenge budget

There has been a 1986 Laser XT that's fully loaded and only has 21K original miles on my local Craigslist for a while for a hair over $3,000. It looks new. I'm tempted to buy it and daily drive it. I bet it gets better gas mileage than my Mazda!

Just means it needs a manual valve body, tons more boost and slicks to run 12's. The 3-speeds are based around the 727's used in RWD applications.

I wouldn't necessarily count on that. My T-D's would get 30 or a little better on the highway and maybe 18-20 in the city if I didn't drive like a hooligan

You would be surprised. Best I've gotten in my Mazda is 31mpg. It's rated for 28 highway, where I spend most of my time. I usually get about 26mpg. And my Mazda is lighter and makes more power than the Laser.

I saw a clean white on white Shelby Z Tuesday on my way home from work. I had thought all of those disappeared from Ohio long ago.

Oh I believe it, mileage was the focus during the early eighties then it changed to emissions as the decade progressed, so mileage stagnated until just recently when it has become a focus on both aspects as technology has caught up.

My 87 Shelby Z got 30mpg at 90mph on the way to Vegas (seriously through several tanks cruising at 90mph with intake vacuum/boost at 0) at regular highway speeds it was a bit better. The biggest drawback to the Daytonas was simply how heavy they were, especially the doors combined with the flexible chassis of the T-Tops. Though the early ones weren't as bad for weight and adding chassis bracing front and rear helps a lot (we built a brace that fit behind the rear seats)

I think the shelby z gets a lot better mileage than the older log manifold ones. My dad had an 86 GLHS for 9 years and got over 30, then later I had an 85 Shelby charger and was lucky to get over 20. I had heard similar from other people too.

It's also about gearing as well as aerodynamics and tuning.

The 84 and 85 cars had different heads (combustion chambers mostly) and slightly different ignition tuning to compensate. The log manifolds flowed so poorly that two cylinders were run slightly more rich to compensate.

Of course 86/87 GLHS used the same electronics that werent know for being very powerful, but the better intakes helped a lot and running less fuel to cool the intake charge due to the addition of the intercooler. 87 cars other than the L-bodies had slightly better electronics (faster processor, more memory) and better tuned maps. 88-on got significantly better, etc.
