A car with a cage and no logbook isn't worth much more than a car without a cage.

Why is that?  Dont you just make sure it matches the rules for the series you want to race in and go get it teched?

Looks awesome for drift, Champcar, Lemons, WRL, AER, etc....

How are you going to prove what material the cage is? (Yes you can drill a hole and get wall thickness but other questions remain.)

Who welded it and will the welds pass scruitineering?

Will the cage pass requirements? (I'm a rally guy and our stuff has to pass FIA 253 Appendix J.)

So many questions that may be hard to answer.

How does anyone prove what a cage is made of when they sell a caged car?

Honest question here as I hope to do some cage work in the future.

Jeez, could they have gotten that main hoop any lower?  That alone makes me look at the cage as a bunch or tubing to be sawzalled out, maybe it meets the letter of the rules but I'm guessing that not a lot of thought went into it.

If the car is being logbooked, have it inspected prior to paint so that they can confirm.  The material is then recorded in the logbook and signed off on.

I can't imagine that anyone would ever fake a log book. wink

Well sure, but it's the best you're going to do in most cases.

I know it's helpful. But it doesn't really "prove" the cage materials of construction.

How do you get any caged car through tech?

What I mean is that if you brought a cage that you knew everything about, how would tech be able to determine the answers to your questions?

I am curious how anybody would ever be able to get a logbook for the first time.

Geeze.  This is $2018 Challenge fodder.

Logbooks, FIA 253 Appendix J. etc. etc. is funny.

Just seems like a potentially decent start for a $2018 Challenge car in the $2018 category it was posted.

Part of the logbooking process is supplying the scruitineer the documentation of the material used, so on a new build the scruitineer will want to see things like the material invoice and the material normally has the specs on it, so they want to see it before paint.

Once the logbook is there, it acts as the proof of following the rules. I have seen logbooked cars rejected by a scruitineer and not permitted to run (horrendous welds).

If you want this for a Challenge car - go for it. If you want it for something else beyond that - Buyer Beware.

I'm with Gssoline on this.

For 20 years cars have been showing up at the $20XX Challenge and being sold on this forum with roll bars and roll cages without logbooks.

Why is this car suddenly an issue?

Car has no logbook. Oh well. I think the seller came to the right place.
