Could be fun a fun swap. How bad would messing with the electronics be to swap that into something else though? Maybe a mega-squirt would work.
I'd guess back in 97 the electronics were pretty modular. Just keep the engine harness and engine/trans computer, hook to power, ground, etc, and you are good to go.
If not, megasquirt/shift would definitely work.
