I babysat a mint 87 just like this with a manual trans for 6 months. It's slow. Like, non-turbo old diesel Mercedes slow. I wouldn't tow anything behind it. Hell, it needs help moving itself.
3500 lbs from a 2.6 litre Montero seems pretty lofty to me!! I'm not sure I'd want to do that with the 3.0 litre V6 in our 91 Monty.
The Montero has around 109 HP. My Nissan truck has around 103. It struggles pulling a 1,000 lb pop up camper. No way would I try 3500 with it. In fact, I fried the clutch trying to maneuver a hydraulic man lift around my front yard.
