I want to make a new post for my mailbox. I'm sure one of you has a random crankshaft or something else awesome laying around. I will send you money if you ship it to me.

Damn, and I was just about to say I have a crank for an AMC 199 I6 in the garage that I have zero need for.

Evan, if this doesn't pan out, I can get you a flywheel and a couple NFG eccentric shafts. That would be probably tall enough to make a mailbox post. I'm not sure how you'd secure it to the ground, but I don't know how you'd secure a crankshaft either so I figure you know what you're doing there.

If this post was made a couple months ago, I coulda got you a free 5 cylinder crank.

Go to any local machine shop or performance engine builder and they will have something laying around that you can more than likely pick up for a few bucks(scrap value). A junkyard or scrap yard will have junk(partially disassembled/stripped/seized/open to the elements) motors everywhere that you can probably disassemble to grab the crank.

The current post is sunk into concrete. I was thinking of cutting it down to a few inches tall and using lag screws into the wood post. Or grind the concrete flat and use concrete screws.

I have realized that local is probably better. I misjudged what shipping a crank would cost.

FWIW, Straight 6 crank shafts are perfect for grinder stands. This is mine.

I know it's probably too short, being from a v8, but I have a 3uzfe crank you're welcome to have. Came from the hydrolocked parts motor I bought off CL and I've been too nervous about its condition to try to sell it.

In reply to dculberson:

Yea that might be a bit short, although if I could source another from a v8 it could work doubled up.

The eccentric shafts might be a good plan.

I like the idea! Can you find two of anything closer/cheaper and weld them together?

Andy (my co driver in the beretta) i believe has a 258 amc crank or two sitting around. I will check, if he wants to get rid of one we could bring it along to the next rallycross we attend. Ill let you know.

You'll need to log in to post.
