In terms of slippery fuel efficient aero

In a pickup truck, what is the choice for covering the bed: Traditional topper, tonneau or a fastback? In my mind building a fast back topper would give me covered bed space I crave and also a fuel economy boost. But I also realize that what the layman considers low drag, isn't. Thoughts?

When I was in college one of the ME students did a senior project comparing tailgate closed, tailgate open, flat tonneau cover, cab height camper/cap, and sloped cover using scale models and a water tunnel

IIRC the sloped cover, like your sketch, had the lowest drag.

edit: I forget if second place for lowest drag was the flat tonneau or the closed tailgate. The open tailgate and camper top were the highest drag.

This is my inspiration and my final goal. Plenty of info on the EcoModder forum about this subject so I'm gonna try!

Found your build thread and I'm keen to see how it turns out. Is The little factory bump or spoiler on the tailgate of newer pickups for aero purposes?
