So first, the quick backstory on this purchase...

Our story begins early one Saturday morning last month. I've got the freshly washed RX7  packed, cooler full of drinks, ready to head off to another fun filled day of autocross. But as I turned the key, the battery had other plans - chug.....chug....click. Seeing as I was already running late and the battery was not easily accessible to jump start without shuffling the dead RX7 and several motorcycles around the garage, I made the swift decision to throw my stuff in the FRS, the reliable daily driver of the fleet that also can pinch hit at auto x duty, and take that instead.

Fast forward to later that morning, I'm entering the last complex of turns, a 180 degree left hand sweeper that leads immediately into another 90 degree left hander heading down to the finish, at the end of my second run, feeling like I was putting together a reasonably quick time and wanting to finish strong.  Coming through that last turn I just got a little too greedy on the throttle, the back end stepped out and I managed to hold the slide for a brief moment before the ass end came around completely. The next thing I know I'm careening backwards, watching a concrete barrier approaching through the passenger window, the lizard brain running rudimentary time-speed-distance calculations. That was the distinct moment, a split second forever seared into memory, at which I realized I was berkeleyed.

It was a pretty solid impact, enough to blow the airbags. Fortunately I managed to come away unscathed, but I knew immediately the car was hurt pretty badly. Somehow I still managed to limp the poor Scion off course under its own power, since it didn't appear to be leaking any fluids, where we could wait for a tow truck without further impeding the racing But it was immediately apparent the car wouldn't be returning to the road anytime soon, or possibly ever. I wasn't terribly happy with myself at this point.

I got the FRS towed back home and decided it would just sit for a while until I figured out what to do with it long term, and focused for now on locating a suitable new DD on the cheap. Needless to say, crashing your car at a racing event where it is not covered by insurance is not an ideal move from a financial perspective. I combed through Marketplace and Craigslist indecisively for a few weeks, talking myself into or out of this or that,  before this 06 Civic Si popped up:

I've always liked the 8th gen Si, a good friend of mine had one for a long time that left a positive impression, and for the price this one looked relatively clean and unmolested. 180k miles, R title from what the seller reported to be a very minor front end collision, some flaking paint. But here's the kicker, car was fresh out of Arizona - never saw a winter. I made arrangements to see it as soon as the seller and I could get together. The paint was a bit worse looking in person, definitely had a bad respray at some point in its life, but the front end damage looked to be really minor overall, nothing important bent or tweaked. A test drive revealed no issues shifting hard into second and third or other weird issues, just a bit of slop in the front end not unexpected for the miles. The undercarriage was as pristine as I've ever seen on a car of this age. I'm still amazed. We quickly agreed on $5200 and I was back the next day to pick it up.

Paint looks alright from 20', but the closer you look the worse it gets. Look at the orange peel and over spray on the trim. I'll have to do something about these bare primer spots before winter.

Over spray in engine bay,  more evidence of bad respray.

Damage to front end, doesn't look like it was too bad.

That's a legit Mugen drywall screw right there - super rare JDM mod cheeky

Interior is pretty mint. I've always liked the combination of materials Honda used in these seats, seem to hold up very well. Has a touch screen Carplay stereo, which is a feature I've quickly come to like.

Under hood shot

Though not perfect, overall I'm pretty pleased with the purchase. I've put about 300 miles on the car so far and it's been a treat. The K20 is a real gem of a motor, so eager, it just wants to go-go-go all the time. I can't drive this thing anywhere and not hit 8k at some point (and screaming "V-TAAAK!" at no one in particular.) The gearbox is typical Honda, just a joy to work, which is a good since it requires it so frequently. The whole car just has a certain busyness about it that makes it super engaging even just running errands around town.

Car has a few needs, compliance bushings in the front control arms are definitely bad, possibly tie rod ends and maybe a bushing here or there in the rear as well. Shocks and struts wouldn't hurt either, so first major project will definitely be going through the suspension. Really could use fresh motor mounts too, but that's about it so far, as best I can tell anyway. This being a Civic and all, and the massive aftermarket that entails, the urge to modify is definitely strong, so I'll be keeping an eye out for cheap speed parts too.

Though the circumstances that lead to its purchase were unfortunate, I'm actually looking forward to the ownership experience. Hoping I can eek out at least a few years of good service and hopefully have some fun with it along the way.

I did the whole suspension on my mom's 2007 EX amd it was quite simple. Not sure if the SI has the same setup, but the front bushings made it ride like new again.

Good score! I'd been looking for a manual transmission car for a daily.

I bought an 08 coupe with the 1.8/5 speed. The 8th gen civic is a good platform.

I wanted an SI, but I couldn't find one I could afford that wasn't modified. Since I wanted to use it for a backup to my E Street Miata to autocross in H Street, I needed it to have stock springs and intake, so when this popped up with 82k miles, I snagged it.

A friend had traded in his 8th gen SI, and sold me a set of koni sports, a big Progress rear sway bar and a set of Enkie wheels, and threw in a set of used A052s.

I've been to two events with it. We had an autocross in the morning, and then a track sprint in the afternoon, and I was second in class both times. It's very slow, but it is a great momentum car, which I'm used to.

Have fun!

I've always liked this generation of Civic. A friend of mine had one back in high-school, and I liked it so much I considered buying one as a daily later on, but I couldn't find one in my price range so I settled for a Celica.

Congratulations on the new car :)

I've put about 5300 on my 10th gen Si.  An Si can be a fun daily.

Sorry about your FRS.

I daily drove an 8th gen Si for years, gave it to my older son at 220K when I switched to a 10th gen Si, he ran it up to 245K and it got totaled while parked. So I bought it back and "restored" it and still love it.

My younger son in college has a 8th gen Si with about 190K and was just saying how it's the perfect car for college that also lets him autox and do track days.

You made a wise choice.

Nice purchase,  I'd rather have faded paint than rust.

What's the value of a wrecked FRS, Challenge?

Yeah should be the same, it seems the problem is endemic to numerous McStrut Hondas. Seems that Moog part number K200799 is a popular and cost effective solid rubber upgrade, so I'll probably go that route. Just trying to figure out how much more "while I'm in there" I want to tackle at the same time.

Nice looking Civic there yourself! In spite of the incident that landed me here, I'm still kind of eager to bring this thing out to an auto x at some point as well. Never raced a FWD car before, and in fact it's been over a decade since I've owned one. Seems like HS is the place to be, although I don't expect this car will stay eligible for long. Sounds like you've got yours set up well though.

Younger son's car is a virtual clone of my buddy's old Si. Would have preferred a four door myself, but can't be too picky shopping at this end of the market. I'm amazed at how well these things have held value.

Encouraging how many examples I've seen well over 200k miles. I figure at the rate I run them up (15-20k/yr usually on my primary driver) I've got an easy 3+ years of reliable use ahead. Have you touched the timing chain or tensioner on either car?

100%. I need to post some pics of the underside, I still can't wrap my head around how a 16+ year old car can be so clean underneath!

Even wrecked, I still think the FRS would be valued over Challenge budget, but if someone were to convince me otherwise that would definitely open up interesting possibilities...

Chains and tensioners haven't been touched in our ownerships.  All I did to the blue one was routine tires & brakes, a clutch at 190K, an AC compressor, an AC condenser around 200K.  We bought my son's car at 160K and it's past 190K now.  We've done routine tires&brakes, some AC work, and installed Konis and rear bar.  Don't know the history of the clutch or anything else.

I checked copart listings, I think it would be a poor decision to sell it for challenge money. Hopefully it doesn't need too much to get it back on the road.

Good to know. I see some people doing the timing chain as preventative maintenance around 200k, others seem to ignore it altogether. One downside I'm finding is the words to information ratio on the Honda forums seems to be exceptionally poor (present company excepted, of course.)

Oh yeah, it's worth way more than that in parts for sure. I was thinking more along the lines of what I could get away with for FMV devil

Honestly, I'm not sure if the poor FRS is ever going to be a road car again, I think the unibody is pretty bent out of shape. Rocker is caved in a good 6+ inches and the cracks in the windshield are concerning. I really need to have a professional look at it though, frame work is far out of my wheelhouse.

I'm thinking if I could get it straightened out well enough, if anything it might make more sense as a race car build.  That would mean selling the FC, which I'm not sure I'm on board with, but the FRS would be an objectively better platform in pretty much every way.

Part out is probably the most likely option. Since people like to crash these and the engines are kind of explodey they're worth a good bit in parts, and there's less of a potential financial downside than trying to repair it for street use.

Anyway, that's where my head is at with that car for the moment.

Did you call your insurance company to see if they'd cover it just in case?

I don't know if you have any friends in the body shop world, but it is possible to save a lot of money on wrecks if you act as a "general contractor" for repairs and buy parts used or through the aftermarket.

As an example, the blue 8th gen had a $7K estimate when it got hit when parked. I bought it back from the insurance company for $500ish. It needed a frame pull, hood, fender, bumper, grille, lights, etc.. The frame pull was $500 and the parts were about $1200 with a huge markup. Paint can be as expensive as you want it to be.  I ended up having the whole car painted with the glass out and spent $5K, but I could have painted the front clip myself for about $500 or had a shop do it once the panels were installed for about $2K.

Another example, my daughter has an 8th gen (not an Si) that got rear ended and totaled with a $4500 estimate for a frame pull, a new trunk floor, new rear bumper and cover, and minor repairs and repaint of the quarter panel. We bought that one back for $800ish (Covid has made everything more expensive, including totaled Civics), $600 for the frame pull.  The trunk floor had a small wrinkle and the quarter panel came back close enough that we didn't repair either. New bumper cover, used bumper guts, and paint were another $700.

Maybe your FRS is worse if it's into the windshield. If you don't have friends in the body shop world (I do and it helps), you could just start by going to a frame shop and see what they'd charge to make it straight, then price out panels on the interweb, and see where you end up.

I know there are people in the insurance claim/bodyshop world on this forum so maybe they'll chime in with more ideas.

Did an oil change and and poked around some more on the underside yesterday. Still blown away at how clean this thing is for a 16 year old car.

Found an oil leak, looks to be originating somewhere on the driver's side of the transmission (opposite the angle of the pic.)  Axle seal maybe? Further investigation required.

Starting to put a list together for the coming suspension overhaul. Compliance bushings are definitely shot, like really shot. Knub on the right is torn pretty much all the way through. Passenger side tie rod end also had a bit of play, so add those to the list. Leaning towards some Koni STR.T dampers and possibly either Swift or Tein H Tech springs - something just a little lower and stiffer without compromising DD functionality too much.

Welp, so long Civic I guess...

Went for a quick run to Home Depot and on the way back, within a mile of home, it just shut off all of a sudden and wouldn't come back to life. As I was coasting to a stop, something went pop under the hood and immediately a big cloud of smoke rolled out from under the hood, then flames out the right front corner. Brought it to a stop and quickly bailed.

No idea what might have caused it. On the way home, before the mayhem ensued, I was smelling something that I thought was maybe hot clutch or brakes, which was perplexing because neither system was giving any indication of trouble. Figured I'd check it out when I got home. I'm thinking in hindsight it may have been an electrical fire I had smelled, but I'm not sure.

Ugh! This car was really growing on me too sad
