I know a guy who has (literally) rooms full of IH engine parts if you need anything really hard to find. Is that a 392 or 345?

I suppose the worst case for the spark plug is pulling the head and drilling, tapping, and maybe heli-coiling.
Of course once you have one off...
I genuinely thought you were going to have it running before I got home; let me know how you want me to make it right.
A head gasket set is on it's way to you now as a start.
Man, I'm so glad you started another build. This is a cool one, vintage trucks are always rad. I was in Jerome, AZ a few weeks back and took pictures of some really cool trucks of a similar era, do you mind if I post a few of em? Figured I'd ask before cluttering up your thread.
Drastic stuck plug options, put a normal socket over it and go get the impact gun? Less drastic: Patiently work it back and forth with a breaker bar slowly increasing the force until it moves, that and WD40 is how I get sticky plugs out of aluminum heads without taking threads out with them. You don't really have much to lose if you break it off. Also, I can't imagine there's a ton of demand for these engines if it is a goner, I found a runner for $175 in 30 seconds.

Word on the street is that it's a 345. I'm sure there's some way to check. I'll also sure I don't know what that is yet. I might be very interested in parts depending on how things progress. Or not progress, depending on how you look at it.

We're fine. Projects are projects. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you're Pete Gosett. You already went above and beyond by offering and delivering it. The rest is on me.
In reply to BrokenYugo:
The big problem is that the spark plug itself has degraded enough that there isn't much left to get a socket to grab. It's sitting with some PB Blaster on it tonight. In order to get a better angle on it I really have to pull the absurdly huge metal brace that's above the motor. This is the one plug that has bad access, of course.
In reply to mazdeuce:
Hey now...
Have you tried CRC Freeze Off? I use that E36 M3 on everything, but it's especially good for stuck rusty threaded bits.

It was good to meet you too. Sorry you caught me when I was all hyped to be actually driving fast (for me) I'm never competitive until I check live timing, then I get all annoying.
I'm sending you a PM, let me know if you don't get it.
Fun, assuming 13/16 (20.64mm) plugs a 20mm 12 point socket might hammer on nicely once you gain access.
Well, there is still a head gasket set heading your way. Don't think I am letting myself off the hook that easily.
In reply to oldopelguy:
Hold off, I still have confidence that the heads can stay on, and really, it's fine. The plan was to start at step 1 and have it running by step 4, I just had to move back to step -3 or so.
345 V8. No performance potential, but it is a 6k lb truck with drum brakes and only lap belts, so I'm currently ok with that. We might get to see a LOT about how these come apart and go together depending on how the next week of wrenching goes.
In reply to dannyzabolotny:
By all means, post away, if you don't this might devolve into me posting pictures of a single stuck spark plug for the next week.
As I mentioned yesterday, in order to properly get to this spark plug I need to move the cab support. It's in the way of this spark plug, and only this spark plug.
I'm a hand tool guy. I like the pace and the tactile feel of good old wrenches. However, this truck is built with big huge slightly corroded steel things. My corded impact is becoming my friend.
I tried the electric impact on the spark plug, that made it much rounder, but didn't move it. Moving to the next smaller size socket, I'm getting good grip with the good old fashioned hammer powered impact driver.
I apologise for the terrible tablet pictures of today. I brought the big camera out but it was so hot and humid the lens fogged up like a beer can and the glass had enough thermal mass that it didn't go away in the first 20 minutes so I just put it back inside and shot terrible photos instead.
The plug is still there. I've heated things up with a torch until the ceramic was glowing. Twice. Nothing. The back of the impact driver is getting mushroomed from all the hitting. Nothing. I've got to take a deuceling to the orthodontist in a second and we're going to try and find a can of the freeze ray that Pete suggested and see if that works. Not ready to take the heads off yet.

I've never heard of or seen an impact driver getting mushroomed before, so that thing is STUCK.
BrokenYugo wrote: Have you tried tightening it a little first?
I did about 100 hits worth of "two tight, four loose, two tight, four loose." I'm still convinced I can get this out without pulling the head. Of course the motor is still stuck so it might not matter, but it's getting to be a matter of principle.
I'm surprised that the plug didn't just break off and leave threads in the head. Whoever made that plug needs to make them for late model Fords too.
Remember y'all MazD doesn't do cardio or weightlift.....this is his workout and mowing the estate....in 95+ temps.
How many people are watching Mazdeuce's spark plug fight, and it just makes them wish they could have a crack at it?

Im glad its not me.
To lighten the situation, here are some cool trucks that I saw while I was in Jerome a few weeks back:
This one was my favorite... a Jeep truck of some kind that had current plates, and it looked like it was in running condition.
So many cool trucks in the abandoned mines in Jerome. I could totally see myself living there and resurrecting all those trucks, there's enough for a lifetime of wrenching:

Some small leftover part of 12-year-old me is still mad at my dad for getting another old F-250 instead of the FC Jeep we looked at in ~'83.
The '66 F-250 did grow on me. It only recently left the extended family, and part of me wanted to adopt it.

In my experience, there's some similarity between impact hammering and dental work, so maybe you can ask the orthodontist for some tips.
You'll need to log in to post.
