You could kill some serious time in that place!
Do they haul all that stuff in and out like a temporary flea market, or do they have permanent stalls there?
"Friday Market" has me wondering...
They make adapters to use R-134a gauges on R-12 systems. My Kingswood Estate was converted to R-134a, hopefully your OctoBob works better after conversion than my wagon did.
Java:
5 hours I killed there and I had to force myself to leave. I was starting to walk back through everything
Karacticus:
I think it's permanent but I cant be sure. There were a few stands towards the end of the day that had tarps over them but I can say with relative certainty that the stand with the Atari moved from about 4 weeks ago to a completely different building (Back when I was completely new here, a friend brought me by just for a quick peek). There was also a stand with a PERFECT pelican case (foam inside and everything) but I think the guy next to it was telling me it was closed.
Crackers:
I just ordered the can tapper and (hopefully) the necessary adapters from fleabay. For some reason Amazon wouldnt ship to my APO box. I hear good reviews from envirosafe from some of the r12 conversion threads online. Hopefully that'll kick it up a notch.
Wally:
Fire hose reel, I think. Could you imagine a AED that size though? You could jump start a small city! (ooh! that reminds me, there was the biggest alternator I've ever seen at one of the stands. I didn't get a shot though. Good god, if the grid ever went down I'm going back to the market...)
759NRNG:
DUDE! I was just kicking myself in the butt this morning for not snagging one of those. I've wanted to make a turbo turbine engine forever and cant believe I didnt think of it while I was there. That BW unit was stinking huge though!
Acme:
hey, I got a place to stay that aint too far away
Also, I never made it down to the car this morning. I was playing around on fleabay too long and now it's time to go to work. D'oh!

It's worrying me that this name is starting to stick (I originally dubbed the car "Matilda", but at that time I hadn't driven it enough for it to really name itself yet)

Dude please, I'm flattered but come on....
I forgot the most important part of this last weekend's work.
I may not have found the hardware store I was looking for on Friday, but I did find THIS!
And that made it all worthwhile
Cheers y'all
That could pass for a US flea market. The similarity is staggering. Including the fact that I don't understand how a buyer meets up with a seller. Like the dude with 25 alternators...what are the odds of finding a buyer who needs that particular one and recognizes it on sight?

I was wondering the same dang thing!
Those air filters in the second to last pic are for a Perkins two cylinder APU/generator, I've changed a lot of them
In reply to RedGT:
You had to walk around with your old part, or a handful of polaroids and hope you got lucky.
Then again people shopping for parts in a flea market like probably have enough familiarity to identify them by sight.
Man, I've been in this hotel a month and a half and I'm starting to get bored
The K&N filter I ordered online arrived but I'm still too afraid to pop the hood and tinker with anything. On the other hand I have absolutely zero fear of bringing that spare Stromberg upstairs with me for a good cleaning...
I the gasket set came with the car (but is not a full rebuild kit), the simple green came from the local grocery store, the mazdeuce picks from my last club sandwich, and that's last months toothbrush that I was saving because I figured I was going to use it for some something like this
(it seems like any time there are three identical screws on this beast, one of them has been replaced with something completely different)
Progress is slow but it gives me something to do. It helps that both Roadkill and Mighty Car Mods both had new episodes lately
less than a week before I get keys to my new place (a bit longer in the hotel until I officially "move")
Good times
Haha! Thanks. I may or may not have got the idea from a sticker I saw at work:
I'm responsible for the handwriting. I just couldn't help myself (even if I AM the only one at work that gets it)
Emergency! Mercedes to the rescue!
On the way home from work tonight the LR4 I was riding in finally collapsed it's front suspension (all the way to the bump stops). It's been leaking for a while from the driver's side, but I guess today the leak overcame the pump because that overheated and threw us into some sort of "limp home mode" where we were limited to 30mph and had no AC.
The driver immediately started talking about shops and rental cars...
well now, I couldnt have that with a perfectly good Mercedes laying around! Especially when I got my adapters in the mail today! (The ones I needed to make the gauges I bought at the friday market work with the 134a cans I bought from Ace hardware)
Here we go: AC service
First, I call the real-estate agent (Mustafa). "Can I have the keys a day early?"
Mustafa: "you most certainly can!"
So I pack a bag and I'm on my way. The real-estate agent's office is one block from the villa. I got my tools, a few cans of soup, a few bottles of gatorade, my air mattress, a sleeping bag.... I am ready for a big fight with this one
(That last one was the initial pressure. Very promising)
So one can later and the passenger vent blows cold. Two cans and the the driver's blows cold as well.
Dang. That was kind of anti-climactic...
So I figured one good win deserved another, so why not put in that K&N filter I had?
Lets go back a bit. First, here's a picture of a filter I found in my trunk. I assumed it to be an old Mercedes filter so I measured it.
When those measurements matched up exactly with the dimensions of the K&N filters I was seeing online I felt safe enough to order one! (see my "afraid to pop the hood at the hotel" post)
Unfortunately (or should I say "of friggin course!!!!") the filter in my car was nothing like anything I've ever seen before!
This big can of a filter seems to be filled with some sort of wire mesh and it looks like a 100X up-scaled coffee filter from my camp percolator. It's heaver than E36 M3 and I'm really thinking it might be washable.... (would love to hear your thoughts on that one)
so yeah, the hard job went easy and the easy job went... well... south. Either way, she's cocked and ready to rock tomorrow. The AC isn't exactly "cold" but it should keep the three of us from sweating through our shirts. She's all we got tomorrow and I'm hoping she'll deliver on her maiden voyage
Good times
Oh, one more thing. My horn doesnt work. Here, that's going to be a big issue. I almost got broadsided by a valet in my hotel parking lot who I still swear had not even a sliver of an idea that I was in the space he was trying to occupy (he was looking back over the passenger headrest while making a 90deg left turn, into my lane, for a good 10 count before I got clear)
and another quick PS: The internet is so slow here I downed 4 beers and clipped my toe nails while trying to get photobucket to load the pictures into this thread... I'm not sure if I'd have felt it necessary to tell you about the latter if it weren't for the former
Cheers y'all (and wish me luck. First impressions and all...)
Awesome work on the AC. Hope it holds up well. With some pressure still in it should keep for a while and you have all the stuff for future charge.
In reply to cdowd:
I'm hoping I can limp it through the summer.
I hear great things about the R12 alternative "enviro-safe" from the R12 guys so I'm thinking in the off season I might try to replace the line I think is leaking (the one with oil residue on it) and run a vacuum in the system. From there I'll fill it up with the good stuff and see what she does.
Other than that I'm thinking she could really use a stronger blower motor for the vents. It's been 107+ this entire week, and I'm sure it's only going to get worse as we approach July and August so here's hopin.
good times
Maiden voyage complete!
more on that in a second, first: I GOT MORE MAIL!!!!
(I'm really loving the mail system lately)
That should make for a fun weekend.
But back to the maiden voyage:
Well, our backs are all a bit sweaty and the guy in the back seat got a bit cooked through the back window but everything went pretty smooth! Everyone enjoyed the ride, the car got her share of compliments, all in all I'd call it a success! I've had to add a few things to my list though... (on top of the uprated blower motor idea and enviro-safe recharge)
horn doesnt work (I think I mentioned that already)
I really need that tint option I was talking about
There aren't any seatbelts in the back (oops... kind of forgot to check that one )
aaaaaaand.... oh, we need some tunes. I think a tape deck to phone adapter will do the trick.
so yeah, without further adieu here are some snap shots one of the passengers took!
That's Neil in the last shot. He's stuck in the hotel with me. Chris is the guy who took the pictures and he lent me his jack and stands so I can play a bit this weekend. I'm excited!
(oh, sorry. Forgot to mention. We work Sunday through Thursday as Friday is the holy day here)
For now the car is in the garage getting her weekly massage (I'm having it washed again)
Cheers guys!
Use apobox.com to ship stuff that Amazon won't. I use it here in Korea, A&P contractor, when someone says they don't ship to APOs. Commie bastages!
