Are 8V injectors the same? I have a set somewhere with new seals. Let me see if I can find them.
Well the interior is gutted for the most part. Pulled the plugs a few days ago to take a look at them and to put some Marvel Mystery Oil in and let it soak in. After a few days, Drained all the oil, added more and I tried rocking the cam a bit for the first time. Moves easy. Planing on removing the AC motor, so it looks like I will have to get another pulley for the alternator. We also got into the fuel tank. Did not look good. Think we are going with are first thought, a small race tank and remove the old one.

1985 and newer Scirocco or Cabriolet would be the only compatible tanks.
Found info on the web on how to get the ignition switch out with out the key ( http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4279096-DIY-Removing-the-lock-cylinder-from-ignition-housing ) It worked great.
For now we also cut the steering wheel lock of so that I can use the housing to hold the upper bearing in. Do any of you have a suggestion on what could work for the bearing so that we can ditch the ignition housing?
The next step is to put a put a push button start in. I cant find a wiring diagram for the switch so I could use some help here on the wiring. I know the 2 hot lines but not sure what I need from there for the starter wires

That big Red/Black wire is the starter wire. When the key is turned to the start position a positive 12v is sent to the starter relay from it. So if going to a push button start you would need to run the red/black to one pole of the button and a 12v source (tap into that black wire in the harness) that is only on when the key is in the run position to the other pole on the button.
This is for 87-88, but looks to be the same for your '86 http://www.bulldogsecurity.com/bdnew/vehiclewiringdiagrams.aspx

Another ?. We were thinking about going to a 15inch 5 lug wheel, What do you all think. If the 15in is a good idea or if we would do better to stay with 14s, What with wheel and tire size would you suggest?
There are so many 15" and 16" options in 4x100, I don't see the point of spending money to swap to 5 lug.
