You can start yours today whereas mine has only a block under the hood. Something doesn't seem fair.

So Derick has apparently dropped off the face of the earth. I don't know if he got my Paypal, or if he mailed them, or anything. I'm giving him another two days and then buying them again.from Rockauto.

Cataloged parts today. I found that I bought one rod bearing from Rockauto instead of four. I asked if a part number was a set or an individual and upon learning that it was for a set, purchased another part number listed the same way. It seems the original was on super mega clearance and that's why it was priced the same. Now I have to add $20.43 to the budget and wait for bearings.

Also cleaned the bores and attempted to ghetto press the wristpins out of the rods. I failed. Any good ideas on how to do this without wrecking the new pistons or paying someone?

I got them in the mail. Sorry about the wait.

Stick then in the oven, heat to as hot as the oven will go, remove with welding gloves, quickly take over to workbench, place on wooden jig (protip: craft wooden jig beforehand, while parts are still cool), tap pin out with a solid metal rod about 1/16" smaller in diameter and a BFH.

Well, I used a propane torch and a hammer. I got it out part of the way and then this happened.

Because I thought that was a great idea, too!

See if you can source a B16 intake manifold for cheap. They're good for a few horsepower, and they're something you can CL or junkyard for.

$600 car + $124.99 previous parts total + $15 piston shipping + $10 for beer for Derick for pistons + $11 for rum for colleague who pressed the wristpins out (and also wants to drive it at the challenge for an autocross run) = $760.99

I have everything but three rod bearings. But now I do have pistons to assemble, ring gaps to check, and journal diameters to measure.

Check out my sweet custom-fabricated fixture for sliding cold wristpins into hot connecting rods:

Untitled

I found that I increased the ID of the small end from 0.786" to 0.791" and that's all I would get. When I got to 0.791", I got a wristpin from the freezer (which did not measurably change the OD) and slid it in. The rubber band was crucial.

Then I gapped the rings and installed them:

I still only own one rod bearing. Hopefully the other three come soon.

No.

But I can't tell what you're looking at to tell you what it is.

Pretty sure that's the top of the fridge in the first pic with plenty of shop "patina".

Helps with the dieting if it's a workout just to get to the treats

All that's in that freezer is a 50 lb bag of flour, five loaves of bread, and some other veggies.

Anyway, back to the task at hand. Apparently the rod bearings are arriving on Thursday. Ick. I can't really do much without them.

How do you even buy a single rod bearing? If you wanted to...

In reply to NOHOME: Rock Auto. Seems their item description is a bit misleading for rod bearings. The pictures imply that you are getting a complete set for the engine specified but 1 really means a set for 1 rod. BTDT, luckily I wasn't in a rush

Exactly.

Plus, I asked that same question about another similarly priced brand. It was a set. I assumed that the rest were sets too. I was wrong to assume that.

With family worship stuff nightly, and a bunch of kids who act older than they are at bedtime, my normal 8PM start time has been pushed back to 9PM or worse every night. It's really hard to get any quality time. I got about two hours.

I got the pistons in, the windage tray and the oil pickup cleaned (sort of) and installed.

Untitled

The pickup screen was full of junk. Little black specs. I backflowed it with oil to get most of it out. Remembering where the bolts went was annoying.

The pistons went in easily enough. I oiled them well and the bores as well. I don't have any assembly lube so I just used motor oil. I suspect that will be fine since I intend to start it pretty soon. The bottom end spins over easily by hand now. Tonight I'll slap the pan on and begin assembling the head and all of the junk which attaches to it.

Not sure I can get it started tonight, and I have two kids with a birthday party on Saturday and another party for the kids friend on Sunday, so it's going to be a busy weekend.

If he's driving it at the challenge he's a team mate not a paid worker, take that $11 out of your budget total.
