Co-worker out at work so a couple longer days but I did get started on this. I had parted another Touareg and saved the roof rails just because I'm a bit of a car part hoarder. And took the rails off this one so I have two sets. I cleaned the roof over the weekend and started thinking how I can use the rails. Still need to figure out how to finish the roof off but I have a couple ideas brewing.
Been working on cleaning up the future bed area and trying to shorten wires. First up and easy is radio. Since it has a factory amplifier installing an aftermarket radio is a pain. Luckily some of that was done previously to bypass the amp.
Colored wires are the factory speaker wires that go all the way to the back amplifier, the the harness hacked into and the black coil run all the way back to the radio. I'm going to cut and splice the factory wires shorter. Then cut the black bundle shorter as it doesn't need that length to go back up to the radio.
Also pulled the CD and power wires for the amplifier. Going to remove them from the fuse panel, not just cut and cap off.
Then next will be reducing wires that go to the former rear hatch area. Third brake is moving, but latch power, glass release, rear wiper motor will all be reduced as well.
Goal for the weekend, install the aftermarket cats I bought. Disassemble the wrecked Touareg to sell the cats from that (different engines and generations) and hopefully be able to use some of the clamps / piping from the wrecked car to finish off the exhaust.
This one had the secondary cats and one primary removed. So one bank dumps up top right out of the exhaust manifold and the other does make it down to the underside but stops there.
I left it uncovered as we haven't had any rain for a while. But it was filled with leaves. So I did take a short drive a mile up the road to try to let some blow out.
I have a more bits of a plan to "finish" the back of the cab. And found and priced out the metal to start it. But I do like to make sure so I might actually mock it up using wood first. My plan is to use 1x3" rectangular tubing. So for under $10 I could buy some 2x4s and plane them down to 1x3 for mockup. No bending planned just a couple miter cuts to cover the curve.
This may not be what I was expecting when I opened this thread, but I'm glad I did. Very interested in seeing where this goes.
The first half of the weekend plans, bloodied my knuckles and took my energy away. Which was removing the catalytic converters from my wrecked 2011 Touareg. I had hoped the exhaust tubing would be the same size as this one and could save $50 on clamps. After 2+ hours on Friday and 6 hours on Saturday, I only tried a little on this one. Downside I saw right away is one stud is half broken off. Not the worst space to get to, but certainly not great. I have a spare engine so I started to practice on it for good methods to remove studs. A couple tries on an easy to access stud with no luck, I'll have to practice again, and maybe the exhaust will get done this coming weekend.
Until then I still have the last radio wiring tuck to do of the excess wires, chase out and remove the other excess from the fuse panel. Start identifiying and seprating the other rear wiring.
Still undecided on deleting the rear A/C unit. the bed could be slightly larger without it, but if the system is charged, I'd need to empty it properly. I can't tell if it's functioning by temperature since now it's only 60 degrees ambient temp, the air from the vents doesn't seem overly cold. I should have a temp gun somewhere. Or I might be able to use VCDS and there might be a measuring block for the compressor clutch that might tell me.
Tool time. Just ordered and should arrive this weekend. Hopefully I can get the exhaust sorted in the next week. We'll see how it goes.
And I did start pulling the rear A/C stuff out. Looks more spacious and gives easier access to the rear differential control module that hidden in there. Slightly temped to leave the tiny heater core and coolant lines back there for a little heated compartment.
And I did delete some of the excess radio wiring and got the head unit in the dash. Bought some RCA extensions and connected them to the front and rear camera inputs. Thinking back now I should have gotten more for subwoofer too but oh well. The Metra dash kit clips in tight and says on the packaging very difficult to remove after in place. It was only $15 so if I really want a subwoofer later I can handle getting another one if it doesn't come out well.
That bundle that remains is the other wiring that went to the amplifier and CD changer. Thinking about using the power wire for a subwoofer is what made me think I should have another RCA. I'll trim it down some.
I need to find a wiring diagram so I can eliminate wires more easily. Right now I'm kinda going from connector and tracing back. It works but it would be nicer if I could cut to the fuse panel, find blue/green wire in position 10 and know I can pull that, rather than pull that wire from say the rear wiper motor all the way back to the panel. Snip at either end and pull out.
Grrr. Test of new tool not working out so well. The directions even say. You don't need to get it glowing hot. 2-4 seconds should be enough. Nope it's not.
This is just for practice. One bank in the truck still has a cat attached, so there's potential for three to snap trying to remove. The other bank the cat is gone but one of the studs snapped when they previously removed it. The exposed studs are also pretty rusty.
Best case scenario I only have to replace one in the truck when it comes time. And maybe I'll have to end up drilling it out and just putting a bolt and nut through it.
