Has anyone successfully swapped a 2006 Dodge Charger Hemi into anything not a 2006 Dodge Charger?
I have a shot on a running police prep car. Considering it in place of LS goodness in $h!tbarge.
Does the ECU need a bunch of CAN reference to run or can it be programmed to run with minimal chassis input?
My 06 Magnum though the V6, not the V8, was an electrical nightmare when it had a intermittent short. I made the mistake of using the wrong word on here to describe their diagnostics codes as "proprietary" and got jumped on, but 03 up Dodge electrical was NOT as aftermarket friendly as Ford or Chevy. There explanation of why its not "proprietary" did make sense at the time they jumped on me (although somewhat condescending) but I'll have to let someone else explain again - all I know is there explanation used different words to say the same thing. Not aftermarket user friendly. YMMV
'Course it also depends on how much money ya want to throw at it!

None?
I think I will pass on it
It's been done, obviously, but it's not nearly as well documented as LSx or similar swaps.
Generally speaking you need the donor vehicle to ensure you have all the components, wiring and modules to keep it happy.
I don't suspect there's much aftermarket for controlling the engine, but if it was available with throttle by wire and MegaSquirt compatible injectors, you can make it work.
Mopar guys have swapped the new hemi a LOT. i don't know the particulars, but know its sort of common.

Is the Hemi a lot heavier than the LS?
I believe the Mopar parts program has a wiring harness and computer to run a Hemi in a standalone application
If you just want stock Hemi power without tuning the ECU, then swapping the electronics should be just as simple (or complicated) as any other modern powertrain swap. Just keep the CAN bus stuff talking to what it's supposed to talk to. That means donor car, so you can transplant the entire harness, key, antitheft, and necessary modules.
Any "proprietary"ness of the Hemi electronics would just mean you can't DIY flash it as easily as, say, the GM stuff with HP Tuners. Idk much about Hemi stuff, but that's true for most modern cars. I swapped a 2003 VQ without a ECU flash (not a DIY friendly ECU unless you have super expensive software). It was CAN bus and had a complicated antitheft system. That meant I needed all the donor car components mentioned before. If I had paid for a tune/flash, I could have removed all the dependencies on key transponder, body modules, etc and it would have simplified the swap. Instead I got it running and just kept trimming wires til it stopped running. Okay not literally, but you get it.
I may be a little bitter, after what the stealership charged me to NOT be able to fix my car! The only guy I found (very blessed to have been recommended too) was telling me how much he paid for his different diagnostic software, and the dodge stuff was A LOT more.
Holley makes a bunch of Hemi swap parts and kits. They have a plug and play harness and engine controller setup that's supposed to be really easy to work with. I have no personal experience, though. It's worth looking into.
I looked it up because I was curious, and HP Tuners claims that the '06 Charger 5.7 is supported by their software. What that means exactly, I don't know; my experience with GM PCMs is that HPT may or may not support a given parameter/table depending on the hardware and OS version. Best to talk to people who have done it first to see whether it's worthwhile.
I had an '06 Magnum R/T for a while and I really liked the noises it made, but the unacceptable quality issues with the rest of the car led me to dump it faster than any other vehicle I've ever owned.
There is a guy in Cleveland swapping them into old trucks left and right but he's essentially pulling the entire electrical system and reinstalling it wherever in the truck. It's ugly and unfinished but it appears quick and dirty.
The owner of the vehicle I was interested in has not responded to multiple contact attempts so I am going to write of the idea as vapor. With the Lexus drivetrain sold I have about $1400 to put into a new "400hp target" drivetrain for the car. A running 2wd automatic vehicle with a bad body is my goal and this one theoretically fit the bill. At $1000 with all the glass broken out I felt it the perfect donor. No response, move on.
I had a very interesting conversation with a friend involving a vehicle that he has that may fit the bill as well. Nothing is solid yet but it's definitely an interesting proposition.
Until then, the idea of the Hemi powered $h!tbarge is officially shelved.
