Took care of one more pixel warning, tailgate latch is tight now and closes properly.

Drove it to work this morning.  I think it needs a transmission mount, the shifter is still sloppy, no heat and the temp gauge sits kind of low.

There is a hiccup as the tach sweeps past about 3000 rpm.   It has a CEL, air bag and brake light still on.

So I'll call that a successful maiden voyage, I mean I did make it to work.

Remembering the drive home two years ago, it was hot, the AC worked and the temp gauge sat in the middle.

I have driven about 100 miles so far in the as installed condition.   Two trips to the dump some random commuting.  After some extended idling I lost a cylinder or two.   They came back on the trip home.

No surprise I had 11 codes come up with one O2 sensor completely dead.  Let's change that out and try again.

My 11 trouble codes are down to one.

P0102 MAF

Do I buy one for a 325 or X5 3.0?  Which will make the computer happiest?  Will it even matter?

How did you burp the coolant? From what I remember from my E36, I think it was from end up on ramps, temp set to max, fan set to high. How's the temp gauge sitting now when it's warm?

I followed the instructions from FCP.  Temp up fan low, bleeder screw, then start and idle.  This did produce bubbles, there must be some kind of electric pump in the system as it had a steady stream without the engine running.

It runs about at the white line above cold, after idling a while while stopped it will come up to the center and stop.  I think the thermostat is stuck open at least part way.

Looks like E46 2.5 and 3.0 and Z4 2.5 and 3.0 take the same MAF.  They are not specific to displacement so I'll get the one that goes to the chassis.

I agree with the checking the thermostat, how does the coolant level look?  If it's been solid over 100+ miles of driving, I think it's safe to say any air pockets have been worked out.

I just threw away the old thermostat because it had some crust around the sensor.  That one worked fine but looked bad.
The one in the car came on the new motor.

Today I will clean the MAF, it has been hanging out in the garage for a year before getting put back in service.  If that fail I'll replace it.

On the way to work today the temp gauge went from it's normal low reading to full hot, so maybe it's not the thermostat and just the sender.  Temp sender is in the thermostat, it has a wire going to it.  On the way home today I'll watch the temp with my scanner.

So I'm down to one CEL code, it has a hesitation/stumble at part throttle and my airbag light is on and I don't know how to check or reset it.  Other than that I am enjoying driving it.   It is slow like a Japanese mini truck and fun to drive like one.  Remember these come with a 4:10 final drive and short tires so banging gears and running through the tach gets you up to 60 mph, 80 is around 3000 rpm.

Just for good measure I replaced the drivers side mirror cover and put new wiper blades on, it still has a stumble.

weird. those things usually fix it.

Seriously, I don't get it but I can see where I'm stumbling off to.

Watching the MAF readings on the way home.  They appear normal at low engine speed infer gentle throttle.  From the stumble range on up it reads a steady 34.55.  Up to that point it rises steadily from a decimal reading up to around 7.

Before todays drive home I will perform the pedal down key on, key off throttle reset and test out the new MAF.  Wish me luck.

Things I changed along the way list.

Throw out Bearing

Clutch Slave

MAF

Engine, 2.5 liter

Pan and Valve cover gaskets

DS Motor mount

Both upstream Oxygen sensors

Vacuum lines

PCV tubes

DS Axle shaft

Currently running and may go on an extended trip this week.

Glad to see you've got it going.  I used to have and 03 X5 with a 5 speed.  Loved it.  I have an almost new but 4 year old set of snow tires that I would give you a great deal on if you could use them.

It's getting close.  The new MAF took care of the stumble but the scanner reads 120 degree water temp.  This matches the dash gauge so tonight it will get a new thermostat.

My CEL still comes and goes for P0102 but it appears to run well.

I don't need tires right now, it has new snows on it but once the kids start driving it we'll see how they wear.

The biggest tires that will fit on the stock 17" wheels is 265-70-17 also standard full size pickup tires.  Helps with the rpm on the freeway as it is about 10% larger.  And they are cheaper.

With the 2.5 in it pushing bigger tires may suck some life out of it but lower rpm would be nice.  4:10 gears and short tires make for over 3k on the highway.

Replacing the thermostat cured a few problems, temp gauge is now running in the center and 180 degrees, low coolant message is gone (plugged in sensor) heat works.  Apparently when I installed the fan shroud I missed the bottom locating tabs and it rubbed on the AC belt tensioner pulley, that noise is gone now.

Now it only has a low washer fluid, brake light and reverse light warning, one of those I know I can take care of.

There is a knock that is louder and lower pitched than a lifter coming from the upper timing cover area, what could that be?  Chain guide, Vanos, death?  It may go away when revved up or just different, its hard to tell from the drivers seat.

I jumped in the deep end and took...the X for an hour and fifteen minute drive to the cabin.  One minute into the trip I rolled the windows up and heard a clunk from the PS rear.  Rolled it down only to see it drop into the bottom of the door.
