More taking stock and making a plan than actually working. So, you didn't miss much!

Give me a few days notice on the next work day and I'll try to make it. Need to get those parts from you anyway.

110 dash parts

55 water pump

starter 20.35

dipstick tube, bolts, intake tube, mas air sensor, etc.

new total: 1426.74

ive spent the time since last update sourcing parts, and having stampie do the same. First, we needed a water pump.

we were missing a coil. Was able to score a full set of 8 for 20 bucks shipped.

We were also missing the starter. Grabbed one from pullapart. Stampie grabbed the MAF, ducting, and a ton of LS bolts for us. As well as a dipstick.

I was able to score the missing dash and console parts from facebook marketplace.

saturday, stampie saw his car for the first time up close and personal. Him and his son came up from Florida just to see it. Steve also came by, as well as dad. Good day of planning, plotting, scrubbing, etc ensued.

we have the cage measured and planned, got all the front suspension torqued and the rack bolted down. There's an amazing amount of filth on the underside of this, and lots of missing parts and hardware to track down. But we have a good start. Stampie is in love, and so is his son. Steve is working his cage magic, and I get to do whatever it is that I actually do.

I plan to get the headers and brakes done in the next couple of days. So to begin that preparation, I wanted to paint the visible parts of the frame and engine block. This is something that I tend to do in stages. Paint the parts that are easily accessible now, that wont be later. It provides visual progress and motivation, and makes for a better overall product in the long run. I used a 1 inch brush and some rustoleum gloss black. Then bolted down the master cylinder, and mocked up the water pump.

next step is actually to m,ale forward progress by NOT working on the car. See, I have a long history of getting projects 90% completed. I have two (1999 miata, and megasquirted 1970 duster) that are 90%. I want them finished. THEN I can focus entirely on nader. While im doing the last 10% on those two, ill be tracking down missing hardware, and figuring out just what all is missing from the fuel system. Which im pretty sure is everything but the tanks.

There is also the little item of working up the cage measurements and getting the tubing quotes to make final decisions on how many pickup points. Mix in some holiday time and that puts us solidly into December before cage materials are in hand.

It was a good time seeing what sort of sillyness is on deck.

yeah....

hopefully ALL the points. just for ludicrous sake. and solid into december is when i HOPE to have the miata back together by. so, solid beginning of jamuary for tubing shennannigans sounds perfect

Sounds like a solid cage plan! Speaking of solid, did yous find solid info on which cage requirements you will be following for Nader?

1 5/8 * 0.120 wall for more than 6 pts

1 3/4 *0.120 wall for 6pts

So I will be getting prices for all the options. Descions will be made once I have the current prices for DOM.

The base Corvette chassis will be plenty stiff, but a 6 pt should add clearance to NHRA limits that are FAST.

Dig some digging around the shop and did not come across the old plug wires I thought I had, I may have pitched them when I was cleaning up a bunch of water damage stuff from the roof leaking and they may have been added to the pile of "when am I going to need these?" (I also pitched about a dozen other misc parts for other vehicles that I have since gone looking for)

If I come across them buried under junk I will let you know!!

I’m very jealous of Li’ Stampie! Keep up the left seat practice!

I just now discovered the Challenge, but no way I could attempt one at this point. I hope to make the event as a spectator next year though!

I’m in AL just W of Dothan and have the tool and some ability, but no room or time. And my wife just bought me a F350 4wd on my promise that I would unload a LOT of my projects! The thought of an Astro Van/V8 build came up… I have a 99 Astro w/parts van and A 97 LT 1 (still in car) that I would LOVE to work something out with someone!

Anyway, this thread just has me thinkin’! Lovin’ the Darth Vader!

sad to say, but nader has reverted to the state from whence it came: a shelf.

Hopefully all the parts will be back in the miata by the end of the weekend.

I've had a couple projects I wanted a 472 for, but never pulled the trigger.Would love to play around with one some day

That's funny because I've had a '70 472 for 7 years but finally found the perfect project car for it last spring.

When I was up there last we talked about cleaning up the engine by relocating the coils and shaving the intake. It wasn't until after I got home that I realized I could shave everything to save Michael time.  I needed valve covers and an intake to exchange with Michael later this month so back to the junkyard.

I got up the Yukon that I'd grabbed a bunch of parts off of before. Seems someone pulled the engine but left it after looking at the bottom end.

That just made it easier for me to pull the valve covers.

Found the intake laying on the side and started stripping it down. Said several times too myself that the broken tabs making holes didn't matter because I'd be melting plastic to fill other holes anyway. Got it all done and then realized E36 M3 Michael needs this one working cause I'm going to shave the one already in budget. Ok time to move on.

I remembered the truck I had grabbed the water pump bolts from had it's intake off. It was in the back corner of the lot so I walked over there and it was sitting waiting on me.

It was in good shape so I stripped it down pretty quickly.

I then checked out so I could get rid of some weight before coming back to look at the import sections.  Started back in and realized I didn't have my water bottle. Look up two pictures and you'll see where I last sat it down. Yep all the way in the back corner of the yard.  Trekked back there and it's still sitting where I left it.

Didn't find any parts to pull in the import section but I thought about Paul for a moment when I saw this.

Walked up on an 89 928 that died an untimely death due to engine fire.

I was really surprised to look inside and see it was a manual transmission. In seconds I started to do a mental mid engine build with it's transaxle for all the Challenge glory. Then looked at the back and noticed it had already been pulled. The highs and lows of mental Challenge builds is a rollercoaster.

Looks like the truck intake probably won't clear the Corvair...I guess it's a hood now. I suggest a Hemi scoop if that's the case.

There's something about the cowl hood Patrick made that's just right. Even down to the red on the sides. Now the cut out on the firewall side might leave a little to be desired.
