Found this while cruising the web. A functional autocross Rat Rod truck. Function over form and what rat rods should be about.

Take one $50 1947 Chevy truck with title Chopped, channeled and narrowed
Frame from a LWB S10 truck with blown head gasket for $200. He reduced the WB and length fron and rear
Junker 305 Chevy for free
Build it and get it on the road for less than $2k
Kicking cones
At rest
Crash it
Rebuild it and add fenders to meet updated Goodguys rules
From the rear
Today, note the functional ram air snorkels in front fenders outside of the grille.
Goodguys autocross changes autocross rules so you need a production body so what did he do? Put an IH scout body on
I need to learn how to weld so I cam do something like that!!
Cool car. Good guys rules sound worse than the SCCA.
i remember reading his build a while back, didnt know he changed it to the IH body.
Every form of this thing has been amazing but the open wheel truck has to be my favorite
Wow, if this qualifies as a rat rod, it might be the first one I like! Kinda sad he had to go to the Scout body though. It looks nice and all but it's not as cool as the '47 Chevy.

How was the pick-up truck less of a production body than the IH? Neither is as it left the factory and the pick-up is factory tin in some formation...no?
I have chatted with that guy before. He used to autocross near me. Never seen it run but I ran across his build a while back and exchanged some e-mails with him. Cool guy.
As a fan of IH Scouts, I do like it. But I also liked the other versions too. Believe its less of a rat rod now that it has a complete body that appears close to stock. Think it would more qualify as a sleeper now. Which I prefer over rat rods.
Damn, I need to sell something!

So.. where do I find wheels and tires like that for under $1500?
In reply to tpwalsh:
I said the initial build was under $1,500, he's worked on it, updated it and improved it for 5-6 years since the original build.
Even so, you could probably get steelies in that size meant for circle-track or modified-class cars pretty cheap.

Read the thread, he did a lot of swap meet bargaining, won some door prizes at automotive events, and won other parts from competitive events. Claims he paid $300 for the wheels, and won the tires.
I'm surprised more people don't go this route for street legal race cars- it seems like the "street rod" laws in most states let you get away with a lot...
that is dead sexy as a scout...

I saw this for sale today and suddenly had terrible ideas about how to make the Lot Lizard a street toy :)

SWEET JESUS!!!!
I am going to need to exercise a LOT of self control to avoid going and driving that.
I love the open wheeled pickup. Thing is a monster.
Love every iteration of this car. Really gets my mind going !
love the truck.. and the bug..

For the sake of being original, could you use something other than a VW shell? If so, would it need to be a vintage body, or could you use something more modern?
I can think of a lot of amusing bodies to drape over a sand rail.

Something interesting, lightweight and with a title. An old flat fender jeep might be cool ;)
This was actually the original concept for the Wartburg, but when we discovered it was full frame and we happened to score the 944 front suspension it made more sense to graft the VW bits to the frame.
