I've been teasing the wife with a Series II or III supercharged 3800 and Audi O1E six-speed swap in her Outback...strong engine, strong gearbox, still AWD...the only issue is getting GM & Subaru electronics to talk. I'm no techno-wizard at herding pixies.

I saw one at a buy-here/pay-here lot not too long ago...I wonder if I could get it cheap enough to make it tempting...

THE ANSWER in these parts are all too expensive, even the first gens.

Volvo really trips my trigger...unfortunately dirtbutts and hipsters have claimed all the good (read:cheap) ones.

Chevette with a 3800 Series II would be a blast!

Fox Mustang is looking to be the most available, if still a little spendy.

That is very tempting...I can even get a Chevy bellhousing to fit the 3650 transmission.

Yeah, JY Vortec/LS are too tempting a package at the price they can be found to mess around with for a toy.

What year outback?  I think the only electronics you might need to deal with are guages and plenty of people have solutions for that.

Putting a 3800 that far fwd in the chassis would probably be a nightmare though.

This thread reminds me... there’s still a derelict 924 taking up space in my parents’ garage.

05 Outback. Have a RWD F-body 3800 block sitting in the garage to swap the Series II/III top end onto if she ever gives me the go-ahead. The weight isn't a big difference between a turbo Subi 4 / automatic and 3800 / six-speed combo, at least according to the individual weights.

Any Volvo ever made up to a 1990 760. Bonus points for Wagon

Pinto, Vega or Chevette if you are so inclined and can find any.

Fox body Mustand with an LSx is hard to beat

MGB if you are looking for a challenge. Been done but it is a bit tight.

The answer with a hardtop = coupe when you  want, and convertible when you don’t.
