Im reasonably certain they are polished,  not chrome.

I like the look of lightly bead blasted Datsun Z finned Aluminum drums. Or flat black Triumph steel./Iron ones. If you fit the Z car type, you may have to dress the backing plate, on a lathe, but supposedly, they do a far better job shedding heat.

Ok, busy busy.

Ordered new BFG Radial T/A street tires in the 215/60-14 size.

Also dropped off the wheels to have to old tires taken off.  Maybe they'll be ready to pick up this afternoon.

Went by the LAPS and got Eagle One cleaner and a new Mother's PowerBall.  So I should be all equipped to do some refinishing once the bare rims are ready.

In your honor im finishing painting and prepping the white wheels tomorrow. Just so we'll be wheel refinishing partners at a distance.

Hopefully yours clean up as easily as they appear they will!

In reply to Dusterbd13-michael (Forum Supporter) :

I am honored.

I love white wheels.  I'll eagerly look forward to seeing your progress!

My lord, I'm tired.  Got a lot done today.  House stuff and car stuff.  Not a nickel of billable hours though.  I really need to work on that...

Wheels!  Back from the tire shop this afternoon!

I found no structural problems or damage at all.  They all look solid.

Here's the first one that I scrubbed and rinsed.  Outside looks pretty nice:

A detail view shows some oxidation, and some small chips on the black inlaid areas:

Nothing terrible there, but the black will definitely need a bit of touch up.

The view of rim area shows some fairly grubby old black paint.  Some of it will scrub off with the Scotch-bright pad.  Don't know that I really want to bother painting these again.  Any good reason?

Inside is pretty gross.  Lots of oxidation and built up crud.  The scrub pad did not get too far here.

Quick detail shot of the spare.  I don't know if it got set outside or something, but it's outside is quite a lot rougher than the others.  Will definitely need paint work.

I tried a different method of cleaning the inside on another wheel. Devil-yellow power drill and nylon-abrasive-scrubby-cup-thingy.  It produced this:

And after scrubbing and rinsing:

Better.

Quick style-comparison between the spare and one of the other four.  The spare is the painted black center.  I prefer the natural version.  Also the insides of the spokes are black on the spare.  I'm undecided on that point.  Will need to study it more.

One last pic!  Put a second coat of paint on the frame.  I'm pretty sure I hit all the little missed spots now.  Will still need to hit the bare spots under the rotisserie brackets, but that's down the road a little.

That's it for now!

Re: the paint around the barrel; is it only magnesium wheels that were sometimes porous enough to lose air there?

In reply to Jesse Ransom (patron dork) :

The English have the ability to make porous aluminium castings. Not common, but I have seen it, and would suspect it on a painted inner rim like shown here.

I hope the 215-60-14 tires fit OK. I thought I'd read that 205s up front, 225s in back was pretty much the limit... unless you plan on flaring the fenders and using spacers. I think the limiting factor up front is inner fenders or frame members or something... maybe Bernard will chime in here. Or maybe I'm completely wrong.

Ha! Looking back through your photos of wheels I see that the previous owner was running 215/60s, so I guess they fit after all. I wonder if there was any rubbing...

In reply to Stu Lasswell :

205s are usually OK, 215s depend on the manufacturer, and 225s will rub. (From memory, which is rapidly decaying.)

You say 225s will rub... is that true in back? I was hoping to get 225s on the rear without any body mods.

Hey, I believe you, I was only asking for clarification. I figured clearance issues in front were a given, but thought 225s were good in back. Hmm...215s are not too common in the tire category I'm shopping.

The tires that came on my car were 215's and they were worn down to the cords.

There was an interference gouge on the inside of one of them, so I'm going to go over everything super carefully when I put it back together.

I've been doing some wheel clean-up the last couple days.

Citrus paint stripper worked really well on the barrels.  Took that paint off in 10 or 15 minutes.

There are different layers of paint on all these wheels, some layers more tenacious than others.  The spare must have been a test for a new paint job or something, because it's all different materials and pattern than the others.

I did use the bristle brush and drill to clean out the oxide on the inner diameter.  Gotta get something smaller to go between the spokes.

More wheels.  More wire-brushing.  More sweat.

Top sides look pretty ok-ish.

Back-sides are half way to not-bad-land.

Man, now you're making me look at my TVR's "T-slot" mags like I should polish them up to use. Thanks, Scott, like I don't have enough on my plate!

I enlisted my assistant in painting wheels today:

She did all the drums.  I just prepped them and then did other stuff.  I did tape off the spokes on one wheel, and then we painted the inside too:

Here's how they look now.  We'll add a second coat tomorrow.
