By definition a "Forum" requires discussion. It is a place where people gather to evolve ideas.
"For the most part, the builds around here are out of the box. As such, some of the engineering and fabricating needs be creative. Even more so when the Grassroots budget comes into play. So the discourse will center on Is it going to work? Is there a better approach to get a better result? Is it safe?"
this needs to Be A Quote at the top of the Page On this Whole Forum. Well Said
This forum seems rather peaceful, i just dont comment if i feel it would cause an arguement. I read alot of build threads here on cars i would never own myself but enjoy seeing the work that goes into them.

I'm pretty sure Porsche (and other marque-specific) forums are some of the most boneheaded places on the internet. If your concern comes from what you did to a 356 and how they responded....yeah I would expect VW parts on a 'Porsche' to get you a load of crap over there and absolutely none over here.
"I would expect VW parts on a 'Porsche' to get you a load of crap over there . . . )
My 356 Pre-A not only had a Beetle pan under it, but also had a '37 Buick split rear window, '52 Buick tail lights tunneled in sideways, and a number plate "box." It was a survivor, but did lead a hard life and ended up a Rat.
The coolest part of the car was that the body mods were done way back in the fifties, the kind of thing that Barris and Windfield brothers were up to, long before the 356 was worth anything and before Emory began building his modified "Outlaws."
Ok, that 356 is freaking cool and deserves to be featured in Classic, if not GRM.
I can't think of anyone here who would make any negative comments about that 356 and the "purists" who balked at the beetle pan under your 356, don't know their history or what they are talking about.
Do as you please and keep us all in the loop, we love oddball builds. Heck a buddy of mine has a build thread on his Lambo Jalpa rebuild where he replaced the stock carbs with throttle bodies and megasquirt along with some other "non-stock" mods.
There's a Volvo P1800 body being modified to fit on a Miata chassis.
There's the Mercedes R63 AMG engine repair, Tuna's Truck build and many more here that have a lot of positive support from the group.
The only posts I've seen in the build thread section that have turned ugly were both the result of obviously unsafe engineering. And in both instances it was the OPs reaction to the questions that spiraled it out of control.

Go 3 wheeler was one, what was the other?

Oh man, I can't remember the car but it was way back when the build forum started. It wasn't a regular here. Someone that copy and pasted the build from another forum that they also got some comments about safety on. Guy absolutely lost it that people were giving him constructive criticism. Ended up being banned I believe.

Aaaaaah.... Go 3 wheeler.... that brings back memories. That was a train wreck.
Don't be like that guy and you will be fine.
Not to mention an expert on bending moments.
WOW ! Thank you for that link to the Go3 Wheeler thread—
Until things fell apart, it was getting pretty interesting. Not sure that what he was doing was different from what came before to make it commercially viable, especially at that lower level of engineering, but the thread DID make me want to back-half a go-kart with a small motorcycle engine and frame.
If nothing else I learned a good three things from reading that thread; don't try to sell anything on the Build and Project Cars Forum, NEVER get into an argument with more than one person at a time, and I REALLY like that Akira bike ! ! !
In reply to TeamEvil:
The only issue anyone could take with that Porsche is the lack of candy hued paint and possibly scallops.

That read-through just made my week, and it's only Tuesday!

That Porsche is cool I'll fight anyone that says otherwise
I love learning about survivor cars that sustained old school hot rod modifications when they were "just a car." Their stories are always so much more interesting than "Owner bought it put it in the garage and was killed by lightning that very evening. The widow couldn't bring herself to sell it after that. There sat a factory new 8 mile 911 until her death in January of this past year."

I dunno, those stories are pretty neat, too. Especially if I find out about said widow and said 911 first.

How'd I ever miss that.

Don't be like that guy.
There is actually quite a bit missing from that thread.
This might have been the final straw for the 356 Registry gang. Not long after I bought the '55 Pre-A Continental, I grabbed up a '65 SC. Sort of bookends, with the very best of the first and the very best of the last of the 356s.
My plans were to turn it into a street Rat with a 1914cc based stroked turbo motor, big fiberglass flairs from a "wide body" Speedster replica, and a rubber-edged whale tale from the "Mulholland-Look" VW Beetle "kit."
The photo below is evidence of my intended crime . . .

Yeah, honestly, a VW motor? That thing deserves to have a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado drivetrain swapped in, making it mid-engined.

I'm a VERY cheap and unsophisticated guy. I keep going back to what I know which is air-cooled Porsche and some VW, and the parts that I usually have on hand; again air cooled Porsche and VW.
Ponying up for another other-drive line is out of the question for me . . . UNLESS, of course, I had the front wheel drive Eldo parts/pieces already out back. I NEVER buy when I can make, trade, or use what I've already got. Were I to try to fabricate a mid-engine set-up it would most likely involve a 914 back-half as a starting point. I have this in mind for my little '58 Fiat 600 panel truck project, but that's after the MGA.
I should live so long . . .

I remember that thread. I thought he was exceptionally well behaved considering what grade A douchebags you guys were being.
