Starting a build thread to chronicle the adventure of building a treehouse for the kiddos. Plan is to have an enclosed portion as well as a small open air area. Supported by a single large diameter oak tree.

I'm a cheap. Gonna make my own tree attached bolts using 3/4" Lag bolts from McMaster Carr and black pipe.

Lag fits square in there now.

Loving the real time updates, feel like I'm there, except I don't have to do any of the work!  Curious what these home made tree anchors are going to look like.

I got a bit smarter on the second one.

Guide tape line and power.

Yes it is happening in real time. This is my project for the weekend. The Einhorn has to wait.

Drill hole...

Realize drilling a 3/4" hole is work, so get the drill press.

Change speed on drill press. Slow it down.

While I'm waiting on the drill to cool down, here's a shot of the rough plan.

Drill press is woefully underpowered. Switched back to hand drill. Getting really hot, bit super dull. So...did what any other GRMer would do. Use death wheel.....

You can sharpen that drill bit with that death wheel.  plans look great!

Also, lubricating/cooling that bit while drilling should help alot, you're removing alot of material to drill a 3/4 hole in a bed frame with a stepped bit.

Use the metal joiner....

Ah, the hot metal glue gun, that fixes all, carry on.

Twins.

This imagine these sunk into the trunk of the tree. 2x12 resting and lagged into these.

This is towards the back of the wooded lot we live in.

And this is the actual tree I'm building it in. 9 feet up its still 28" in diameter.

Yeah I should have listened to you, or known better. The hack a "hole" with the cut off wheel was MUCH faster.

The steel use for bed frames is a special alloy that is really really tough to drill through.  Figure on burning up a lot of bits.

Really? I just figured it was the absolute cheapest steel available. The more you know!

Well it "was" a Harbor Freight cheapy and started out dull from the last job I used it on. But good to know it's a strong alloy for holding the kiddos up in air.

Got the wife out there to help hold the opposite end of the water in a tube level.
