Well I removed the engine this weekend.
Will have to order a timing belt and valve cover gaskets so I can fix that stuff while it is on the stand.
Time to get the damn parts car out of the garage!!

If you've still got the LF fender off the bugeye and it's not totally rotten at the base we should probably talk. Are you close to a Greyhound depot?
In reply to ssswitch:
It is a little rusty at the base, where it bolts to the chassis but still solid metal. Yes, we have a Greyhound depot right in our City, they won't ship across border AFAIK. You have somewhere you can pick it up in Canada?
Well I decided to send the parts car packing. A guy building a rally car wants the WRX wiring harness and I decided that it was too much work to pull, so I am giving him what is left of the car.
Tonight I went after the timing belt on the replacement engine.
When I pulled the covers I found this:
So I ordered a new one. Old one is off for now. New one will go on tomorrow.
Whoever put the crank bolt on the last time must have been Hercules! It didn't come off without a fight!
Big night in the garage (for me at least). Only the 2nd timing belt I have ever done and the first Subaru, also the first DOHC one.
All buttoned up:
The transplant patient is back in the operating room! (Pushing cars with no engines around really sucks )
One of the steering rack lines is completely borked and I can't get it out in the car. Pulling the rack out tonight.
Other than that engine is ready to go in! And . . . . . . . . .
When I am done, I want to sell it!
Why?
Because Rally Car. Stay tuned.
Well it looks like I borked the rack!!! The high pressure connection would simply not come out. I tried everything heat, penetrating oil, etc. I tried to drill it out and I think I made nothing but E36 M3 out of that.
Hopefully I can make a scrapyard run tomorrow afternoon. Looks like there is one about an hour away.
Got the steering rack from the scrappers - 3 hour round trip. Doesn't fit!!!!!!
Looks like the interchange information must be wrong.
Took the day off Monday - I have to make a 5 hour round trip to the nearest auto recycler that has the correct steering rack and return the wrong one.
Tonight I changed the right side cam cover gasket on the engine to fix a small oil leak.
STi rack was not the right one!!!
That was a complete waste of a day. Turns out a local scrapyard had an 07 WRX sedan. Rack from it will work. They are going to pull it tomorrow.
The Rally of the Tall Pines is in 1 1/2 weeks and this is scheduled to be one of the Course Cars. I have a lot of work to do.
Tomorrow I get the new steering rack and new rebar, so tonight I pulled the tie rods off the old rack and the rebar off the car.
Well, I'm finally going in the right direction - parts going back on instead of off!
The steering rack and stabilizer bar are back on and the power steering hoses are installed. Turns out the 07 rebar is missing a piece but I was able to remove it from the old rebar and I just have to install it.
Did a lot of small stuff tonight:
Hope to get it running this weekend!!!
Just have to finish:
Then it will be time to fire it up!
A Subaru returned to it's natural environment!!!
Mother nature kindly provided us with about 10cm (4") of snow to go with my roll-out. I still have a couple of small issues to fix. I have a CEL (05 ECU expects to see a PCV sensor that the 02 motor does not have - this will be a PITA to fix) and a small exhaust leak.
Well that didn't go well.
I was heading out to get it certified after working through several small issues. Only a couple of minutes from home it started look power and I got a flashing CEL.
Took it home - P0304 - Cylinder 4 misfire. Started troubleshooting and the plugs are all white, which would seem to indicate it's lean. The car has sat for a while so a guy I know that knows Subaru's suggested changing the fuel filter.
Of class in 2005 Subaru changed from an easily accessed on under the hood to an in-tank one that is harder to change and get to!
