Day 77 - March 6, 2017
Made Wastegate flanges.

The rough shape was cut out with a sawsall. Then we chucked it up in the mill for the holes and machining the flats. Then used the belt sander to round the corners.
Day 80 - March 20, 2017
Started making steering column support. Welded wastegate tubes. Cut holes in fenders for exhaust.
Wait, that front fender is rusty. My understanding of fiberglass one piece front ends says lack of rust is one of the advantages.

The fiberglass front end was not purchased until November of 2017. We're getting closer. There will be a big jump in time for when we started working on the Sunbird soon.
Day 82 - March 22, 2017
Began making more ducts. Began to stiffen front end so that it can be one removable piece.
In reply to mazdeuce - Seth :
It does not lighten the car. Removing the inner fenders does though.
A removable steel front end is helpful when you need to work on the car. Changing spark plugs is a lot easier when you have a tire to sit on.
My dad may know the weight of the steel front end, but I do not. I can tell you the difference between the steel and fiberglass was 97 pounds. Plus we removed more by making the support structure lighter. It was over 100 pounds off the front end when we were done.
Do I see six points of attachment?
Very much watching this and trying to store away the details for the future.
In reply to mazdeuce - Seth :
Yep. We could get away with 6 on that car, because the distance between the front of the door and the beginning of the wheel opening was so short. The Nova will require 8. The Datsun required 8.
Day 85 - March 30, 2017
Made struts the tie the front end together.
Here is where the project stalled out. We started working on the Sunbird around this point, and this car went up into storage.
Queue the elevator music....the Nova was moved aside from 3/30/17 to 10/26/2017.
The Volvo below was originally going to be our $2012 Challenge car, but we missed that year. We worked on it from April to the end of June 2017. Picture below is from day 42 (01/10/2015) of that build. We worked on the Volvo from day 65 to day 82 in that build in 2017.
At the same time April to June 2017, we prepped Bugzilla for local racing, took it to Carlisle to display in the GRM Stand in May 2017, and then the Road Kill Zip Tie event June 30 and 7/1/2017 (discussed on other threads).
We ended up so energized by the Zip Tie, that we came home 7/2 and converted the Sunbird from a SBC/T400 combo to the 5.3/Turbo/T350 package that showed up at the Challenge in October of 2017.
Then we were reinvigorated at the Challenge to get back onto the Nova and the fiberglass front end showed up at the Maple grove swap meet. As you will see, everything will be changed to allow room in the budget to the fit the front end in.
Here a peak at the Volvo. But someone loved it more than we did.
