Challengers confession. I was running out of time to find a source to control the relay. So I tap into the drivers side fog lights with one of those cheap wire tap. Everything else in wiring for the pump was done properly. I think the car needs front subframe bushings. When I had it on the jack the front subframe had some movement. There should be a poly replacement available.

I think the fog lights work fine for the injection system.  I was looking for replacements on the subframe bushings.  I found one that they say you don't have to drop the entire subframe.

Yeah I like the fog light controling it. Just worried because the splice isn't weatherproof. It needs a better solution at the fog light wire harness to tie it in.

you may not need to drop the subframe to 'install' but good luck getting the old bushings out with the subframe in the car. just shooting from the hip here.

The instructions for these involved a hole saw if that gives you an idea.

I did the subframe poly bushings on mine a couple of years ago.  I thought about trying to do it without totally dropping it but I also replaced the rear motor mount and that is MUCH easier with the subframe on the ground.

I feel like I've been neglecting the Saab. Couple of weeks ago I started getting the flashing engine of death light when I hit higher boost. After a bit I figured out that it started when I filled up with gas. I put in 93 but after thinking about it I'm sure that station doesn't sell a lot of 93. So I drove it easy until I was down to a 1/4 tank then filled up at a station I felt better about.  That seems to have fixed the boost issue.

I had a swedish moment this morning on the way to Home Depot.  As I was going through an intersection the first car stopped at the cross red light was a beautiful blue Volvo 245 Turbo.  As I was going by I was very obvious on checking it out and then I noticed that it's driver was just as obvious about checking the Saab out.

Once I got home I decided to replace the arm rest with one that came in last week.

Old one.

It went smooth until I dropped the retaining clip down the AC vent.  It was so deep i couldn't see or feel it with my hand.

Put some Harbor Freight magnets on the end of a nut driver and fished it out.

All done with the new to me arm rest.

I think I berked the Saab.

So I noticed a few weeks back a tick that sounded like an exhaust leak. That's the preface to this story.

Monday I drove Lil Stampie to school in the Saab and when I was almost home the oil light flashed for a split second. No oil guage so I couldn't see the pressure. Parked and that night I checked the oil. First I noticed that I hadn't seated the oil dipstick/fill cap all the way. It was low on oil so I put some more in it.

This morning I took Lil Stampie to school in it again. No oil light flashing but in the first mile I heard what I thought was the exhaust tick getting worse. Told him that we needed to fix that. Last red light before his school the oil light came on solid and my brain said E36 M3 that exhaust tick turned into a knock. I pulled into a bank parking lot as it lost power and the sound of bearing damnation grew louder.

Walk Lil Stampie the rest of the way to school and called a friend for a ride. Called a tow truck on the way to my first job and now the Saab is back home waiting for me to give it last rights.

oh no!!!

Ian was a saab dealership tech for quite some time, and he told me once that the "procedure" any time you had an oil pan off of one of these engines was to use a screwdriver to punch massive holes in the oil pickup screen.

Since the turbo exhaust goes right under the oil pan, it is easy to cause sludge that gets stuck to the screen and plugs it. The other problem is if there is ever a bottoming out incident, that can push the exhaust even closer, or worse can push the bottom of the oil pan closer to the pickup.

That said, I'd bet a replacement engine is probably pretty easy to source from a yunkjard. IIRC you needed to do the mounts anyway!

Yeah but I don’t need more projects in my life. Travis is already hounding me to stop gathering parts for the Model A.

Maybe you ask one of the other locals to slam a used engine in it for a few bucks. Jeremy's guy? Fladiver? Gotta be others.

Nope. Working on the daily SUCKS. you don't need that added stress. Give the dude a c note and a steak and a bottle of whiskey.

No car guy card damage at all.

It was funny when the tow guy got the car to my house he calls me with a little panic in his voice.  "Hey I can turn the key in the ignition but it won't come out."

Think you lose your car guy card if you let your unicorn slip through your fingers so easy. I say get a bone yard engine and pay someone to slap it in. You have the resources to save it. Pretty sure its brought you enough joy in two months to deserve that. Think of the potential...

Yup. Your car guy card is safe because you CAN do the work. It gets a bonus star for realizing that you don't WANT to do the work,  and can afford not to HAVE TO do the work. Spend the time on finally getting the k30 going. Or the miata. Or....

I paid a shop to replace my transmission because winter. Working on my back in freezing rain is not something I'm interested in doing. I'm not concerned about my car guy card at all. There's nothing wrong with paying someone to do a job every now and then.

I think the car is worth fixing, but that's just me.

I try really hard NOT to work on the daily so I can spend time working on the things I want to. I would have lost my car guy card years ago.

Can you loose your car guy card when the car in question is so GRM? I agree with paying for someone to fix it. You can still focus on your project cars and just enjoy the Saab when it's fixed. I don't think I've ever seen another manual 9-5 wagon. Would be a shame for this to be the end of it.

My In Laws 03 9-5 Aero just got totaled a week ago and since I do the maintenance on it I know the motor is good, just saying.
