Fresh oil and a new filter. Car sounds ok.
I saw no debris in the old filter, mind you it only had about 15km on it. The oil coming out (also 15km) had a faint shimmer of metallic in it, but that just could be rings and cam lobes at the best of times. We'll keep an eye on it.
Fingers crossed for SK1. I tried the "refil the engine and pray" trick once on an ACVW engine I built. I got 250 miles out of that engine before spinning a main.
Exciting news....
No new developments on the engine over the loss of oil. He may have dodged a bullet. Probably a benefit to running the stock cam with original valve springs.
Then he suffered a heater hose failure, which then developed into a leaking water pump, and he got to see the "TEMPERATURE" light on the dash. And kept driving....
Excitingly, no bubbles in the rad, no combustion gasses in the coolant (we did the dye test), no white or blue exhaust smoke. Boy leads charmed life.
The heater hoses got replaced at that time, and then finally new rad hoses arrived. He discovered the lower rad spigot (barb?) off the timing cover was mostly dissolved from corrosion. So....
Off came the timing cover, and I machined new spigots for the rad hose and heater hose, and TIG'd them on. While we are in there, the plastic-toothed aluminum OEM timing chain was replaced with a new Cloyes unit. The plastic teeth was moments away from exiting. Good timing. No pun intended.
All back together now, and he was successfully dailying it while we re-did the head gasket on his Civic.

Re-written as exactly worded (repeatedly) to the kid.
