Yep. I'm sure the front wheels never left the ground, but it sure felt like it!!!! No ac,so with the windows down I saw the headlight trim on drivers side flying; later I found it on passenger side of seat... Apparently when it was passing my window, I was busy white knuckling the wheel, and didn't notice it passing BEHIND my head to get there!!!

Sorry I must have missed your post with Thanksgiving. That photo perspective is misleading. He was below trans level and was more in danger of the impact falling on top of him than the engine.

Today was all about a quarter inch.  Here's how the distributor ended up after we got the engine in.

We loosened up all the motor mounts and trans mounts and hooked the hoist so it would pull the engine forward. This shows where the mounts were and where we ended up.

And we have success.

Good thing we replaced the cap. Looks like someone pushed my button to the limit.

And new cap on just in time to go see Star Wars.

We decided to gather up all the core parts so I could return them but first we installed the hood because everyone knows once you put the hood back on you're close to the finish.

While we were in there I decided to put the crank pulley on.

I'll need to retorque it because the torque converter isn't hooked up yet so the engine spun pretty easy. Yes the last person to do the water pump believed in RTVing the hell out of it.

Thanks.  I was just thinking the other day about why I was putting so much effort into a vehicle I bought for parts but it comes down to yeah it's a cool truck.

I'm having bolt issues. I didn't put it in this thread but last week I grabbed a serpentine setup from a 96 Suburban 454. I ended up cutting the stud on the drivers side head to get it out.   Here's the junkyard 454 engine.

I went back this morning and grabbed the cut off stud so that I could match it up.  After I left the yard I realized I had my E sockets in the truck and could have grabbed the passenger side stud as well.

After lunch I had some time so I went to a different junkyard that was close by. My theory was a similar year SBC probably used a similar stud. I already knew the 454 used an E10 socket so I went in with just a socket and ratchet.

Looked under the hood of a 98 Tahoe and see this.

Grabbed it and looked under some other Vortec hoods until I found a second one. Thought I was good to go until I compared then to the cut off 454 stud and realized they were different sizes.

Here's what I have.

Top is the cut off stud. It's 7/16 14.  Middle is one of the other two bolts per side from the 96 454.  It's 3/8 16.  Bottom is the SBC stud I got today. It's 3/8 16.

Thinking that the BBC were all 7/16 I grabbed a stud from Ace Hardware on the way home.  Once I got home I found that my 86 454 is different in a strange way.

Driver's head is all 3/8ths.  Passenger side head right (stud location) is 7/16.  The lowest hole on that side is also 7/16 but the other hole is 3/8th. What confuses me is the two heads are different. Maybe that's the way they are. I think I'm going back to the 96 454 and grabbing the stud I didn't cut and that'll leave me with just having to buy a 7/16 bolt for the lower passenger hole.

Are you now as confused as I am?

Oh and I forgot to add that we go to the GMC dealer to get a new stud like the 96. Dude says it'll be two days and then said it's $35 per stud. Berk that.

Yikes! Allthread! Otherwise known a "spaghetti noodles." Very soft stuff. Usually less than grade 2. It's available in better grades, but then its more expensive than a proper stud!

I knew today was going to be a crappy day. I started it easy enough by going back to the junkyard I hate for the last pieces I'd need. I grabbed the stud that I didn't cut, the thermostat housing and the trans dipstick since my end was broken off.

Once I got home we started on the bellhousing bolts. The bottom two on each side of course aren't that bad. Then we got to the drivers top one. I got the bolt started by hand but found I didn't have enough extensions to get the racket where I needed to.

We decided that we'd clean up the intake area then grab extensions at lunch. First we took off the thermostat housing and the EGR valve. I'll have to make an EGR block off plate but it looks much better without it.  We also removed the thermal vacuum ports right above the water pump.

After lunch we went to get Lil Stampie some new shoes. Last August I bought him 8s because he measured at 6 1/2 to give him growing room. Near Christmas he complained they were tight and this week he came home with the toe worn out. He's now a 9.

He's also a shoe whore so he hit my back account pretty hard. I pointed out that I've gotten several cars cheaper than his shoes.

New shoes put him in a good mood so onto the top bolts. Can you see this one on the drivers side?  Right above and to the right of the middle bolt.

Can you see it now that I have a socket on it?

That one was a walk in the park compared to the passenger side. The passenger side has the trans dipstick tube bracket that needs to go on that bolt. But the tube itself is in the way and the transfer case to bellhousing brace is in the area also. Took about an hour with Lil Stampie moving the tube around while I tried to line everything up by feel. You can see it here but if I was looking through that hole I couldn't reach my arm high enough to get to the bolt.

After that Lil Stampie was ready to be done but I reminded him about his new shoes, handed him a breaker bar and told him to turn the engine while I did the torque converter bolts.  Six bolts later we're done for the day. Going to reward him with hood waffles for dinner.

I absolutely despise bellhousing bolts.  Had 4 feet of extensions when I replaced the engine in the truck in order to get a halfway decent range of motion on the ratchet.

Good work.  I've had projects set back weeks (probably months, if I really was honest) while I found other stuff to work on before getting around to those top two bellhousing bolts ;)

My 54 Belair has a factory access panel for the top bolts.  Gm used to think things through, 65 years ago.

I just always pull engine and trans together.  Even if just doing trans work.  It's usually easier when it comes time to put them back together anyway.

The only good thing about RVs and vans is the easy access to those two bolts.

I did a great job of collecting parts this week.

Oil dipstick and tube. Not happy with non factory look but hey it should work until I find a factory part.

Header bolts. I'm a little worried because earlier in the thread I said that the passenger side head had a broken bolt. Lil Stampie nor I can remember fixing it yet I don't see a broken bolt in there now.

And I truly think I'd still be running a 6.2 diesel if some DA hadn't thrown out the starter brace. Actually more likely the PO wouldn't have sold me the truck because it would have still been running for him. Was surprised to see the tag on this. I think it's an OEM part. Not bad for $9 on eBay.

Not pictured is a trans modulator vacuum hard line I pulled from a 71 Olds this morning. Right after pulling it I got an emergency call from Lil Stampie at school. Seems he forgot to put on a belt this morning and his pants kept falling down. That meant a 30 minute drive home then 15 more minutes to his school. He's lucky I don't beat him.

Give him a roll of duct tape. Or rope. Either will hold pants up for the day.

So will 14 gauge or bigger wire.

Oh trust me I immediately looked at the wire in the car next to me. Then I thought about the zip ties I had in the truck. But he's at the stage where I knew it wouldn't be cool if Dad showed up with anything but a belt.

I went to the junkyard looking for a HD alternator.  Only found two. The first had crunchy bearings and the second was buried so deep in a van I didn't even want to work to get it out. Walking by a Blazer I saw what looks like a brand new reman never ran alternator.

Grabbed it and an oil fill tube laying on the ground in the Ford section. I might be able to combine it with the long as hell RV tube to make something work.

Here it is mocked up in the truck. I still need to figure out how I'm going to deal with 3/8ths bolts in 7/16ths holes.
