The build started today with a road trip. Grandma was in town so we all loaded up in the standard cab Chevy and drove 3 hours to Bainbridge GA.
We'd found a guy advertising a torn down 472 with 3 extra heads for $125. After confirming the crank numbers once we got home we ended up with this:
Late low compression rwd Cadillac 500 in parts.
Two early high compression heads.
One late low compression head.
Set of headers for an air boat that I think we can use.
Two Holly carbs.
Two flexplates.
From this parts haul we plan on using just the HEI, a carb, starter, and the headers. That leaves a lot to sell to make our money back.
Pretty good haul of parts. How bad is the shortblock?
Not bad. Just I quick look but I was thinking a hone would do. Now I have crazy thoughts of building a 540 ci high compression motor for my k30 out of it. But I need another engine around here like I need another hole in my head.
Woohoo. Another road trip.
Talk to guy for three weeks, drive over an hour with a trailer, and he's not there. But his brother is and says he can negotiate. Cool. Agree to $200 but then the brother says we'll have to come back to get it cause he can't move the other vehicles in the way. Sad day for Team Stampie.
Just two of us made today's epic road trip.
Finally we got our Little Monster. 1994 Ford Ranger with a seized 4 banger for $275.
In reply to mndsm:
It does come with a plastic liner in the bed ...
OOOOOOOooooo. Please say mid-engined big block. Your welding resource is only 2 hours away :)
I like where this is going.
I actually have no idea where this is going knowing stamped, but I can't think of a bad direction from this starting point.
In reply to NordicSaab:
I thought about it but if I do rear mid engine where would I put the bed.
In reply to Robbie:
Thanks I think?
You have a minitruck, a big block, and now my attention.
It's a compliment, didn't want to be project presumptuous.
That's a pretty decent looking Ranger for $275. How's the rust? Both rear springs have their leaf mounts still attached to the body?
No real rust issues. Just about every body panel has dents and scratches. The bad engine and 200,000 plus miles really hurt his chances to sell. It helped when I told him the truck would end up in a junkyard unless he found another stupid buyer like us willing to make it into a race truck.
We're going to be tight on budget for this one so I'm stepping up my game.
Tonight Asa and I noticed that a neighbor put out an old garage door and tracts that was damaged by Hurricane Matthew. Just took a minute to throw the tracts in the pickup.
Also a couple of weeks ago I scored an old metal ironing board sitting on the street.
Sorry for the picture quality but they both were at night.
On my challenge build sheet, under the "most valuable parts resources" ebay was followed very closely by garbage night trash scores
You're doing it right.
The other day I saw a fence guy with a bunch of old post in the back of his truck. Can't get anything without asking so an asking later I had two free.
Today was another road trip day.
No school so we drove 90 minutes away to pick up a set of 15x10 alloy (centerline?) wheels. Unfortunately the seller neglected to notice the 15x8 cast into the wheels. Seems like the on going theme to this build.
So a stop at GameSpot on the way home lead to a fun afternoon of Xboxing.
So this build started as a hey we have a lot of stuff laying around, let's build a fast Ford and not outlay a lot of cash out of pocket. The tire rule issue from yesterday got us going over our proposed budget and the NHRA rulebook. We came to the conclusion that we couldn't run the big block Caddy motor. Even our best alterative motor only left us with $38 in our proposed budget but over a grand out of pocket. Sorry but we decided that we couldn't meet our goals for the Challenge with this build.
