So, I started a thread Friday asking about windshield repairs on the Rio. Got home and sure enough, something hit hte lower left corner of the windshield, made a nice star that then cracked all the way across the bottom 1/4 of the windshield. She starts talking about how much a windshield is going to cost, then says "If we could find a nice used car in the $8k range I'd say we just get one and then after winter sell the Rio."
So Saturday I'm perusing CL and happen across this:
We go take a look at it. Talk with the owners, check the carfax. Car was damaged in transit, required a headlight, bumper cover, hood and fender. Repairs were done and the car was sold at auction to a used car lot with 100 miles where the current owners bought it. Car is clean, tight and has 41k miles. 2014 so what warranty I would have had would have run out (original purchase date would have been 2013). $7500.
So we're back in the Forte business as of tomorrow night when we pick it up.
Details:
2014 Koup EX, 2.0L GDI, 6-spd auto, UVO infotainment. It's got the same basic power my 2.4L SX had but with the auto, gets better fuel economy (38 over the 33) of the Rio and is QUIET. Be a great DD for the wife for the next 5-6 years.
Funny how that works! I need to change the oil ... eh, never mind, let's get a new car. ;-)
That's a pretty sharp looking car - I didn't know the Fortes had been dressed up a bit.

Yeah the 14-ups are a lot nicer car than the 10-13. I think it feels a little less fun than my previous Forte, but for what we're purchasing it for it'll be perfect.

Car will need tires by summer. It's got some crappy Primewell's up front and the OE Goodyear's in the rear. Still drives great, I reset the trip computer and even with a little happy time throttle usage averaged 36.1mpg on the drive home.

I can keep my Korean-humper cred. This actually a stupid nice car for the money. It is going to take some getting used to with all these modern convienences like bluetooth, eco mode etc. I already have some maintenance plans for it this weekend (seafoam because it's GDI and an oil change) and a general inspection.

I have a 2011 Forte SX as my "I don't screw with this one because I need to know that it will run every day" car, and it's been a great little city and highway cruiser for the last couple years. Much, much more refined than the Kias and Hyundais of old. The Koreans certainly don't scrimp on the options, either.
You mentioned the Seafoam deal because it's a GDI. Mine's a GDI as well... the first such one I've ever owned. Are GDIs bad for coking up?

2011 is not a GDI. 2010-2013 were 2.0/2.4 Theta II port injected. The 2014-current were 1.8 MPI Nu, 2.0GDI Nu or the 1.6TGDI Gamma. All of them are timing chain engines though. If you think the '11 is refined, wait til you get into a '14-up. They make hte 10-13 feel like a 90's Excel. Quieter, smoother, better interior materials etc.
On your '11, I ran Wynn's t/b cleaner through the intake while the wife ran the throttle in the car and cleaned the air filter (had an intake) and PCV valve about once a year. That engine sounds fantastic with the Kinetic Motorsports cat-back exhaust. never droned, nice sound and great off throttle burble/noises.

DINK. The only thing I have to watch for are my "kids" eating their poop. This time of year they love poopscicles.

So wife got it plated yesterday and now I'll never see it again. *sigh* Oh well. It was just in time as well, weds I got to leave work early, get teh truck and trailer stuck in the yard for 45 minutes, the drive across town in rush hour traffic for an hour to load the Rio on the trailer. Thought it was a locked alternator (happened on my 02 Elantra at about the same mileage, same alt). finally got home and into the garage to find that the alt tensioner had backed off. Apparenlty the cut-rate mechanic I hired (me) didn't tighten the alt adjuster bolt in anticipation of re-tightening the accessory belts after a week of driving then he forgot to retighten them.
So car got new shoes last saturday, a real spare and jack/tools. Ordered floormats and oil filters. It has been averaging 34-36mpg for the wife so far. A nice, smooth car with good fuel economy.
Comparing it the first gen Forte, this is much more refined. Ride, comfort, power delivery, noise, seats..... it's just better. But with that it's also just a little more boring. It doesn't have that nice, crisp steering feel. Brakes don't have that "I'll throw you through the windshield" feel. The Rio has a more crisp, tightness to it but for what this car is for, it'll be perfect.
