Hey Bryce,

Drop me an email. We'll make sure you can make the show; if the board can help get your car here, we'll put you up and make sure you have no expenses for the weekend. Tim told me all about your car, and he was impressed--to the point where he was really embarrassed that you did all that work, came all the way from Oregon, and had nobody to run against. We'd like to help change that by getting you to Florida.

i'll try to help when i off the next load of scrap

the result is one awesome car though - plus i love seeing GM stuff. the 9.36 1/8 mile puts you solid mid 14's in the quarter too - pretty damn good.

30+ last minute cancellations my ass - probably never had anyone really register to begin with

Just a thought, but is there a GRMer in Bryce's area with a trailer?

Thinking maybe someone could drive the car down and save a bit on shipping.

Bryce is the GRMer in the area with a trailer! Jared has one and a truck, but he's pulling to Nationals and I doubt he'd be able to turn right back around for the Challenge.

Wow, I'm really flattered with how many of you guys are giving to the cause! There's nearly $500 in the pot now...you guys are really putting your money where your mouth is. Thanks a bunch gang, if things keep flowing in like this the Fiero will make it to Florida.

GameboyRMH wrote: Did you teach yourself about working on hybrid powertrains? You make it look like you've been doing it for years!

Teach myself? Not really...lots and lots of reading and a few helpful friends go a long way in projects like this. On the surface, this project might seem really complex, but one of the many things I've learned with this project is that it really helps to break things down to the basics. The metal fabrication work is mostly stuff I've picked up in other bizarre projects I've done in the past. I'm getting pretty good at stuffing ten pounds of stuff into a five pound bag, that's just from practice. The EV stuff I've been learning a lot on over the last year or so, lots and lots of reading, like I said. The low voltage stuff is pretty much the same as any modern car has, some sensors going to some computers. The high voltage stuff has been new to me for this project, and I learned a lot from some friends and the local EV club. When you break it all down, it's not that complex.

Heh, just saw this update:

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/events/west-coast-challenge/

The Mothership said: Bryce Nash took psychological warfare to a whole new level for the inaugural West Coast $2009 Challenge. As news of his amazing AWD hybrid Fiero spread across our boards and on to Jalopnik and other sites, would-be Challengers began to wonder if they could compete. “I got 38 e-mails from the other teams explaining that they had read Bryce’s build thread and decided they couldn’t win,” said West Coast Challenge Competition Director David Chong. Team Unit Racing was one team to take up the challenge, but they couldn’t get their Lancer finished soon enough. They made it to the Challenge Sunday—just in time to take first place in the autocross. At that point, however, Nash had already taken home first-place honors.

The write up was good for a chuckle.

bluesideup wrote: Bryce this is "The Other Guy" as I was the other competitor in the WC $2009 Challenge. I can't really say why no one else showed up. My Challenge car was built almost entirely by myself alone in my garage. I think I had the gas tank bouncing off of my face installing a fuel pump about the time you were tearing down the drag strip (great times BTW!). The build officially started a month ago and finished the day of the Concours competition. I drove down to La Cocina in Ramona hoping to get a look at your very impressive car. Unfortunately by the time I showed up everyone had gone home. Some might question the sanity of driving a just completed car 180 miles at night but hey I'm not the smartest guy in the world! I managed to make it to the autocross and was the only competitor for that event. It is too bad there wasn't more competition and the event wasn't advertised. I borrowed a friend's lift to drop my engine in and had several people ask why I was building the car. They became very excited about the idea to go racing on a limited budget. As to say who would have actually done something I don't know. The parking lot was however occupied by at least one derelict Miata and E30 BMW. I look forward to seeing further development of your car and hope to see it in the future. BTW my entry was a '95 Mitsu Mirage with a 4G63T (Turbo Talon) engine swap, fully rewired with the Talon harnesses, EVO8 suspension, and a whole lot of zip ties. A fairly simple approach in comparison to your amazing car. I was 50/50 on whether it would blow up but it ran like a champ.

I Showed up at 7pm at La Cocina, but David left, he apparently changed the time to 6pm the day before. i didn't get that note. Too bad i missed both of you guys. I saw the fiero at the drags, it was impressive. I was leaving in the white datsun 240z and i stopped on my way out to congratulate you guys. i just assumed you would go to the last event so i could get a better look. I bragged to all my friends that i saw your fiero in person. I feel bad about your situation. Anyways you guys don;t give up. That car is baddass!

Thanks guys, it just keeps coming in! I'm up to almost $600 in the paypal account. I've been selling off some more Fiero parts to do my part, tonight I'll be digging through the basement to see what else I might have around that I can sell off to get the car down there. Margie told me to fill out my entry form, so I guess I better behave and do that tonight too...rumor has it she rules with an iron fist.

Hey! I'm a benevolent despot. Though I did tell the guy who painted my bedroom the wrong color that if he didn't get it fixed by Friday so I could move my furniture back in Saturday, I wouldn't kill him, I'd turn him into a zombie so he could kill his helper first, THEN I'd kill him. But I smiled when I said it.

Yeah, we will cover food and drink, entry and hotel rooms when you get here. Everyone has to room with Rennie eventually. Just kidding, we save that honor for someone special.

We are sending out a national press release shortly and I asked our P.R. agency to use the Fiero to showcase what a Challenge car is all about, so you have to come now.

That's quite an offer Tim! However, before thinking about some perks when I get there, I'm still focused on the task at hand...getting the car there!

Today I did some more calling around and I'm pretty sure I've got the lowest bids I'm going to get for shipping the car down to Florida and back. The good news is (drum roll please...) I've officially got enough money to cover getting the car there! There's still a return trip to figure out, but we're getting close! I'm really awestruck with how generous so many have been and how many people want to see the Fiero compete in Florida. Very cool.

In reply to Nashco:

Have you talked with any of the shipping firms about maybe cutting you a discount for some "sponsorship" decals on the car? After all its sure to get good GRM coverage. And we are all a bunch of loons who ship cars all the time so we would look favorably on any shipper who is helping you out with this.

If a shipper agrees I'll cut the vinyl sponsor decals for you for free, just need the info.

Holy crapzors. Wade just donated $500 towards the cause! I'm really at a loss for words...I guess I'll just fall back on repeating that I'm very, very flattered! I'm now very close to being able to seal the deal on the truck transport.

JThw8: That's a good idea. Yesterday I worked with the cheapest shipper I could find and got another slight discount just by asking for it, but hadn't considered the sponsorship angle. I'm still new to this whole "sticker on a car" concept. I've got a call in to see what I can swing in regards to cutting a sponsorship deal, we'll see what comes of it.
