I miss my Bugeye wagon. 
Some thing to look at in an 02 that has spent time in new england that I wish I had paid attention to earlier. On the interior, you'll find there is this rubber coated foam insulation that covers the rear strut towers. While it does a good job of killing sounds, it also traps a lot of moisture in that area, and will cause premature rust.....as in kill your car rust. Doesn't take long to get in there and check it out, to make sure everything is good and dry.
You guys ended up with that car? Excellent!
Before driving it home, we did some basic repairs to make sure it was ready for the 2000-mile drive.

I haven't seen many manual wagons, is it manual?
If it's not manual, will the standard (in terms of basic) automatic transmission hold up for some autocross?
What are your plans? Will this car see use in rallying?

If it's not a manual, that new clutch they just put in in the post above yours was a waste of money.

It's unpredictable. It doesn't know when to shift. But, yes, automatics have clutches, too. I just don't know if the automatic destroys clutches,
I have heard that automatic transmissions can make clutches completely vanish! True story.
Andrew - first of all, welcome to the forum.
Second of all - these guys are just yanking your chain (get used to it). You're probably thinking of a torque converter, not a clutch.
Yeah, automatics can damage the "internals," too, is what I'm trying to say. Even forklifts have automatic transmissions with clutches, and they never grab, because the forklifts have more miles on them than on my Subaru.
Andrew's right: Automatic transmissions have clutches, too. They're inside the transmission case, not in the bell housing.

Hey, we're a little behind here, but the engine is now out of the Subaru. My fiance's cat, Akiko Jones, stopped by to help. She has no thumbs, though, so she just stared, judging, and then left.

Oh man. I was just reading in the latest GRM issue how bad it is if you see any copper in your WRX oil.

It's bad to see copper in any engine's oil. Engine bearings are made of copper. If you see copper in your oil, your engine is done.
