Bad link but running driving it's probably worth it. Ain't no way I'd spend that on seats.
At the very least, he must be adding in the cost of shipping complete seat assemblies to Germany and back.
I've tried contacting the seller. It's a biz number and after talking to a lady got no response from the actual seller.
People really underestimate the amount of labor involved in properly upholstering a pair of seats. The materials are the least of the cost.
To tear down, make patterns, cut new or repair the foam and to stitch up the covers can be well over 40 hours for a simple pair of seats. Multiply that by the shop rate in your area and then add materials.
5800 seems totally reasonable. It is also why a new pair of Scheel-Mann or Recaros are actually a reasonably priced option if originality isn't critical.

He emailed me an engine pic. I too got the roofing company but he said the phone number is in the listing. (It isn't)

Seconding this as I work in automotive seating. Many of us GRMers are happy with doing our own upholstery cleaning and a little vinyl repair and living with the end results. If you want something a little nicer for your project and a pre-made replacement cover and/or foam isn't available for your pair of fifty-year-old seats (or even thirty-year-old seats) and you go to a restomod shop and ask for them to be rebuilt with new materials, $5800 is certainly right in the ballpark.

There's like 99% more Beetle there than you have!
Lol, I have a speedometer and two patch panels left so a bit more....

I'm so out of touch with prices - you presented a really good point. Maybe with age it's normal to feel prices are ridiculous?
Seats all the way from Germany. NOS materials and full refurb of the frames can easily get that expensive. Lets not forget shipping cost.
Most of us here would get the e-bay vinyl kit, a can of spray paint and spray adhesive and be done with it for about $200. But not what the owner envisioned.
The opportunity here is buy the car and sell the seats to someone who cares about this stuff. Easily get 2k if they really are as represented. Replace with cheap junkyard seats and you are rolling in your Bug.
