Last time I drove one was when my mother had one in the mid/late 90s.
She had the precat clog up enough it wouldn't run due to burning oil. I did a re-ring, bearings, and head machining in it while she had it to fix it and ended up knocking the guts out of the precat in the manifold.
In general it served her well until it was totaled when it was re-ended waiting to make a left turn.
I'm not sure on the excel.
They were Mitsubishi powered, same engine and trans as the dodge colt from a few years earlier and the Mitsubishi??? (I used to know which models shared parts when the parts catalog didn't list Hyundai, but it's faded into the land of lost knowledge).
I'm still a little surprised that the company recovered from those cars. I guess the ten year warranty accomplished what they hoped it would, although maybe not from the customers' perspective.
Needed a dependable beater car to drive to work in a bad neighborhood, back in 86. Bought a new 5 door; only option was ac and tinted glass. $6100.00 out the door - title taxes and all! 100% trouble free during the 36K miles in a year and a half I had it.
Was it a luxo - barge? No. But knowing it was a E36 M3 box, it did its E36 M3 box job as well as any other.
If he cut his price in half, and was nearby, I'd prolly chance it!
