Wife's cousins husband has a 2011 Subaru Forester (I think) that apparently has a blown engine. They can't afford the $3500 to replace it right now and can't finance anything. Need a car within a week that is reliable. $2k budget. As close to Eastern MA the better. Not car people, need to be as close to turn key as possible, please. Probably nothing really odd. Think beige Camry here I think. Any help is appreciated.

Neighbor has a 2006 Prius with 150k for $3k in MD if nothing else pops up.

They really didn't give me parameters, so I didn't really include any. I'm certain due the fact that they're not car people that they want something reliable-ish(small budget). The husband is a big guy, so a Miata is out of the equation. My go to is Toyota because I've had such good luck with them, but I don't know if there is much good in New England in the Toyota brand at that price point. I was told late last night that they could stretch to $3k. I haven't looked, but I bet they could find a Sienna like my 06 in that price range, but it might not be in the best shape. Heck they might not want a minivan, but I love mine.
I would be looking at old Corolla's. 2500 should get you a very late 90s or early 2000 car that is in good shape.
Beyond that get a GM mid size sedan with the 3800. Very reliable and when they do need repairs they are not going to break the bank.
Edit: You want a gen II 3800 not the early ones.

Seems to me there's no better option than grandma's Grand Marquis if this is really a 'beggars can't be choosers' situation. Buy that, have a fully functional car right now. Done. Either keep driving it indefinitely, or just keep driving it til you save a little more and find a good $3000 deal for something more modern and efficient.
The Merc. is going to be about the cheapest car you can own and maintain. Finding one for a grand ain't hard... most folks don't want an ol' granny car. They get decent mileage... if ya drive 'em like a granny car. Parts and labor are usually cheaper, IF you find a mechanic that likes to work on them... Mini vans are cheap for similar reasons, and are more versatile. Maybe less likely to need to go to the shop, but more expensive if ya do!

I saw a 1998 Corolla with 52k miles on CL earlier Today for $3500 and thought there's a car that'll never die.
Apparently they just bought an 08 Mazda3 with 111k for $3500. I guess the budget kept growing. IDK. Thanks for the help guys.
Rav4 is scammy. 140K awd v6 rav4 limited is about $10k on the private market.
