It is not that they are awful when they run, it is the frequency of failing to run that spoils the party.
Are the problems confined to specific systems, such as electrical, mechanical, cooling, tune, or just overall too complex German overengineering?

I am betting CAN bus party time 24/7 is at the center of many, but far from all, of the challenges of owning one of these.
This is one of those cars where I would only want to own it if I had been through dealer tech training school and had the full suite of diagnostic tools available to me. And I imagine parts pricing would still kill any fun of ownership.

My assumption.
Mercedes has a department that oversees all engineering designs to make sure they are as complicated as possible. Then another department that doubles the previous complications.
