The first few words that came to mind for me, but I'm predisposed to dislike air-cooled VWs.
As my dad famously once said, "If you're going to put all that effort into a custom build, why not build something that can be considered an upgrade on the original donor?" My dad is where I inherited my distaste for said VWs, BTW. Someone else might have some more charitable comments. 😉

I have seen a couple of these finished and they are so over-the-top ridiculous that they come full circle to being cool again, IMO.
Can't afford a 911? These are sort of the same thing.
Still, props for the description.
I could see that being a 'I know what I have' with a starting price of thrice that...

NO. No, I just can't bring myself to agree with ya there.
That was one of the worst kits at the time, and have only gotten worse.
But, I guess someone had to like 'em. 
I guess one could be ok. IF ya started with a different donor. AND put better looking panels on...

Wow... I remember seeing these kits in magazines back in the 80s. I don't think I've ever seen one in person, even at Carlisle. Seems like a reasonable seller. Not my cup of tea, but I can understand the allure.

Me too. I always looked forward to receiving my newest addition and restoring an old CJ
These kits were made in Arizona and one was on the cover of Hot Vws back then ,
This was the time of Miami Vice and all the slant nose , wide fenders with air scoops and big rear wing on the back ,
Normally put on earlier model 911 because they were cheap at the time :)
Not somehow modify that idea onto an old bug and you have this !
