They were actually pretty popular back in the UK.  When things started getting ratty/ratty/rusty but the mechanicals were still good, it was an easy(ish), cheap(ish) way to get a 'new' car.  Also as it wasnt' really a kit car, more a serious body kit, the finish rate was far far higher than the average kit car.  The mechanicals weren't touched.
