Those Smyth VW conversions look really nice. Probably as close as we'll ever get to a return of the Rabbit Caddy.

I strongly agree with both parts of your statement.
That's a really well done little car/truck thing - I'm not sure they'll get 9, but dang if they didn't put in the sweat equity.

If you can get a nice jetta for $2k you can get the smyth kit for $3k (i think). A quick weekend worth of work, and maybe a paint job.
Especially with the TDI I can see how the owner very well may have $9k in it. And it would be most of that to re-create.

I dare say - as someone who's built a "complete kit car" from scratch - that the cost of the parts is only about 10% of the work. And with good paint, a great interior, and good finishing work - if you can do that in a weekend I applaud you. No doubt - I think they'll struggle to find the right buyer at that price, but if they didn't put serious sweat equity into that - they paid someone to.

I've never built a smyth - (but I have built a saab ute ;) ). Saab ute was absolutely much more than a weekend, especially with all the people who helped.
I got the weekend quote from studying these smyth kits over the years. I thought they said you could do it in a weekend. I think their website now is advertising 'a few' weekends. I absolutely agree that the $9k is probably less or much less than the builder has/had in it.
also, looks like you can buy a VR6 turbo (now we're talking!) ute from the smyth folks themselves for $9.5-11.5 depending on how much you want to do yourself. https://www.smythkitcars.com/utes-for-sale that might be the deal to consider if you're interested in the car in this thread.
