Need a roof. Fleet sale. 90 Integra GS, 02 Boxster S, 94 Century wagon, 06 Grand Marquis GS

So the story...this just happened

The house was built around 1900, we're still researching to get the specific year.  This is the house my wife has dreamed of since childhood.  It's had a ton of work done to upgrade and update it.  We came to an agreement with the seller and are in our due diligence period.  We knew the house needed roof repairs and were prepared for it.  The roof specialist came out yesterday and said it's the original slate roof that's been repaired over and over and is beyond fixing.  Ever priced a slate roof?  We will be selling our existing home but not until a few months after settling on this house (capital gains bullE36 M3).  So we are by no means destitute, but I don't want to dip into other resources I have.  I'd rather just sell off my fleet of toys to help offset the cost.  I can always get new toys, and I will after this dust settles, but there's no way in hell I'm letting the house of my wife's dreams get away from us.

Next is a 2002 Porsche Boxster S 6spd.  It's this car... https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/cars-sale/nmna-02-boxster-986-s-7500/228308/page1/  I literally just took possession of it last week.  It runs and drives great.  Shifter is a bit tight, not as slick going into gears as I'd like, but no grinding, crunching or anything.  As you can imagine for the price it's not a show car, but it's damn good for the money.  I'm $6800 into it and that's all I'm asking

I bought this 1994 Buick Century wagon from my the auto auction where my son works.  Bought it about a month ago.  It's so damn cool.  Someone put some love and care into it.  Interior is amazing for the age, only the dash top is cracked.  Red velour seats are basically mint, stereo system has an HD back up camera (though I suspect wiring needs looked at as the speakers cut in and out).  It fires up instantly and runs/drives as you'd expect a 1994 Buick to...like a couch.  Has the backwards facing 3rd row.  A/C works, windows work, etc...  original woodgrain is gone, some clearly poor body work on left quarter.  True mileage unknown as odometer is broken, reading 130k.  I'm $2000 into it and that's all I want for it.  

Last but not least is what was SV reX mom's 2006 Grand Marquis.  Details are here https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/cars-sale/p71-lovers-my-moms-grand-marquis/198064/page4/  The front end looks pretty good now, I put a brand new grille in it.  This thing runs like a tank.  Everything works except the cruise control.  Only other issue it has is something to do with the seat belt pre-tensioners.  The airbag light is on and the car will beep at you 5 times in a series of 5.  It then stops and will do it again in about 40 minutes.  Rinse/repeat.  My 15 year old twins have been using it to practice driving.  Car has something like 65k miles on it.  I think I'm $1600 into it and that's the asking price.  Only "catch" is you have to wait a few weeks, as my 18 year old is now using it while his HHR SS gets a new cylinder head put on.

Again, please don't misunderstand this post.  I'm not about to be on the streets, far from it.  Just in the spot of crossing house sales and don't want to dip into other resources.  Heaven knows I'll find a billion cool cars this summer, but I'll never find another one of these houses.

It's a really good car for the money.  Runs great, drives great.  CEL on for O2 sensor.  PO said they were replaced and register on his scanner but car is still trips CEL.  He mentioned something about putting a spacer in, but I don't know much about it.  Exterior and interior are probably 7 out of 10.  Not terrible by any stretch, but not a top flight car. Shifter boot has small tear, passenger seat has some wear, etc... For a $6700 Boxster S, it's super hard to beat IMO.  I was planning on cleaning it up a bit and driving the living E36 M3 out of it.

GLWS. I would be hard pressed to rebuild with new slate. New plywood and a high end asphalt shingle would look great on that slope. 

I want the Buick and Boxter, but I'm not going to buy either.

I agree on the roof, how much charm is that roof worth?

Unless the underlayment is shot, slate roofs can always be repaired instead or replaced.  Slate and thatched roofs have no lifespan. Speak to a few experts and stick with the slate. It's nice to see old, long wearing materials still used on a house. All these McMansions are pieces of crap when it comes to Quality

Threw a rod in my truck. I wish that Grand Marquis was still in my driveway...

I could really use something like that in the interim.

I've done a lot of slate roof work. 
 

First off, slate roof rarely have any underlayment.  They are usually installed on furring strips. 
 

I agree with you that slate has an astounding lifespan, and lots of repairs can be done for a very long time (with specialized skills). Usually 75-100 years can be expected. 
 

But they do not last forever.  That roof is 120 years. A cracked slate is easy to replace. But when a roof gets to be really old, the slat starts delaminating. It's soft and flakes apart. When that happens, it's not just a few shingles. It's all of them. And it is then time for replacement, not repair.

**As an update on the Boxster, I just pulled the title out of the envelope, as I said, I literally just got the car.  It's been signed over to me specifically, so I presume I'll need to go to the GA DMV and put it in my name.  That usually takes a week.  I'm happy to figure something out with the buyer and let it go now and then overnight the title**

Yes, as SV rex said, the roof is beyond repair.  There is no underlayment.  It's believed to be original and has clearly been patched many times.  For example, the house once had 3 chimneys and now has none.  Someone appears to have gone up there at one point to fix it and didn't know how to walk on slate, they cracked a bunch of it.  With no underlayment, water is getting in.  So the tiles need to come off and some structure underneath it needs replacing.  It's a big ass job, and we're working with the sellers now.  The house is just under 3k sq ft, including the bedrooms on the 2nd floor where the dormers are.  My wife is beyond in love with this thing, so I'm going to make sure it happens.  She's already immersing herself in the town, etc...

I almost typed out "please tell me you are replacing it with slate, it would be a crime to just use shingles" on my 1st post, lol.

For all the money, absolutely rebuild with new slate... but I expect it's easily over $30k to patch the framing, install new sheathing and ASPHALT shingles. And it can be done by middle of February.

Slate would definitely be better... 

We are still getting quotes but a true slate roof is on the order of $80-$100k, including removal of old roof, replacing damaged framing, etc.  There are synthetic alternatives which we are exploring as well.  No way in hell will I just put plain asphalt shingles on this house, it's going to be done right.  Hence why the fleet needs to go for now....

Maybe the young'ens should take the driving test in the wagon.  After all, it a little smaller than a Grand Ma-key.  The wagon is also rather square and best of all where the rear window is located is where the car ends so it might be easier for parking/maneuverability tests.

Go Grab it, use it as you need, and sell it to me after you're done with it.  Indy-kid2 doesn't actually get his license until October, so he won't NEED it until then.  I have cars here for him to learn on.
