So what's the catch?

seller wrote: For sale! 2004 Subaru wrx Sti 6 speed AWD sedan only has 37,500 original miles. Car runs perfect has a lot of power! A/C blows cold! Has brand new tires! Everything is all original. Only thing the car really needs is shifter bushings they are very cheap still drives fine just a lot of slack in the shifter. also needs a lil paint work on the bumpers. Asking $13,000 you won't find another Sti for this cheap!

So uh, someone want to loan me some money? It's missing a spoiler, and I have a gallon of the right color paint sitting here to go on the miata to make this my dream car.

If it's too good to be true...

Clearly some of it has been repainted. Maybe a salvage title?

In reply to Armitage:

I saw that too, and the general condition says "well-used" to me. Though the title status is listed as clean, not that it means anything.

What kinds of problems do these cars have? Do they have head gasket issues like the WRX or any other significant flaws? I'm not ready to start shopping, but if I were I'd probably go take a look.

Hmm...here's a white one for $12k.

Far from an authority on these things but a couple of friends have had them and I recall high oil consumption is considered normal. Haven't heard of head gasket issues. On an '05 the rear shock mounts were rattling badly by 50k. An ex co-worker blew his motor at a RallyX but I don't recall if he ever determined the cause of the failure or how heavily modified his car was but I seem to recall it was pretty much stock.

This one is legit-ish. Dude sent me a clean car fax on it and seems human.

Turbo Subaru's don't typically have HG issues, that is the NA cars. STi's have ring land issues typically on cylinder #4. Never buy one without a compression or leak down test.

Wild guess that sellers are using blue book value not realizing that the market will pay significantly more. Also it's a twelve year old vehicle...

Buy it if you can afford it!

Keep in mind that the 04 STi is the least popular of the STi's mostly because they were a 1-year oddball. Only STi with 5X100 bolt pattern and smaller wheel bearings.
