I believe that was a one-year-only motor. Considering a clapped out modern Taco with 200k is still $6000, that price seems almost reasonable

This would be an awesome drivetrain upgrade for the Dnipro express.  From memory they only made the turbo's in the us in 84/85 and you could get them in the 4runner and the truck.  THey came with lots of tweaky bits like Nissen multi piston alumninum brakes and other goodness from the JDM bin.

I must admit, I had a similar thought, though I think "stone ax simple" might be better for the Express.

I will say, the 4x4/manual transmission ones got a beefier trans/t case. Trans was R151F (if memory serves right). Can't remember the transfer case code. I know the manual was not available in both the 4Runner and the truck. Just can't remember which one got it, but I'm leaning truck.

I had an '86 4x4 with 5-speed - was a total stripped down model with rubber floor mat, etc.

Unfortunately, the bed rusted into oblivion.
