If that was only closer, I'd flip that in a heartbeat. Spend $1200 including a used ECU, maybe challenge it and flip it. That mechanic wanted nothing to do with it if they quote $3500 for a new ECU.
That seems like a weird story.....$3500 to fix the ECU, but free at the dealer? Why not just tow it to the dealer?
Could be a cheap k24 donor for someone though.
I get the dealer thing. Jeff City doesn't have a dealer and it's a 3-4 hour tow to one.
