Found this one on CL in Phoenix. I'm interested, but need some eyes on it. Anyone in the greater Phoenix area?

This one is cheap.
That seems like a decent deal even if high miles, and no rear locker. Anyone local that could put some eyes on it for me?
Mitsu doesn't give the warm fuzzy feeling either, but I understand that these aren't built at all like the crappy Mitsu cars that I'm familiar with..... If someone knows better, please correct me.
Monteros are incredibly solid and the SOHC 3.5 is a mundane timing belt and water pump every 100k but otherwise very reliable. The DOHC 3.5 has more issues but i would still recommend them to certain people.
Are the 3.5 and 3.8 of the 2001 and newer compatible? I found a nice 2001 that blew a timing belt going down the road.
I am looking to buy a third generation.
Was the 3.5 used in anything else, endeavor, eclipse, diamante?
I'm tempted to buy a broken one but the running ones don't cost that much more.
There was a Gen 2.5 (98-00) on CL in the Phoenix area with the 3.8 litre swapped into it. The engine was blown I guess, but at least one person has done the swap.
Not mine...yada yada. $1500 in the DC area. Looks good in the one supplied photo.

Looks scammy to me. No carb on these. Terrible wheels on that thing too.
Chris
Craigslist dude says its a 97 so it may not be a generation 2.5 but its closer to what you want than the gen 3s and its also $700 obo which may help.
I'm going to look at this Monday. Auction is Tuesday morning, 9am.
Are you interested?
As an Ohio Salvage title it will require repair and state inspection before it can go back on the road.
From pictures it just looks that the plastic bumper cover needs to be removed and reshaped back to correct shape. Maybe needs fog light lenses too.

Not quite local, but at least they are in the Northeast!

Thanks for the effort, Tony, but not what I'm looking for. Mitsubishi makes it really hard to do searches for the Montero(full size), because they sold a lot more of the Sport models like you linked, but still called them Montero's. They still confuse things with the Outlander, and Outlander sport. Of course you could get a Endeavor package on the full sized Montero in 2000 not to be confused with the Endeavor to further confuse things. Thanks Mitsubishi!! No wonder they almost sell no vehicles in this country.

II looked at this one. It seems that someone really cared for it. All things were working like switches, knobs, AC. I could not really drive it other than a short forward and back but it dropped into forward and reverse properly. I ran through all the transfer case settings and that seemed good too.
No real frontal damage and looks like it could be a cheapo fix. Tires are spectacular and the spare is crap.
At the close of pre-bidding, I am the high bidder and there is still some room left on my max bid. In about 30 minutes I will know if this becomes my wife's DD. She will like the high seating. I will like the 5k# towing capacity on occasion. Neither of us will like the 15 mpg but since she drives less than 8k miles per year, we won't really notice.
Edit: Won It!
$1,300 winning bid for 4,600 lbs = 28.2 cents per pound
I like these much more now than I did when they were new. They seem to be exceedingly rare these days. most likely found at the buy-here-pay-here lots.
Maybe I missed it earlier, but what's the draw to this specific year/model?
