One of the most important cars in BMW's history, the BMW 700

While small in stature, the 700 is significant to BMW’s history in more ways than one.

In addition to being the first BMW to use a steel monocoque structure, the 700 also helped BMW from going under.

This particular example is a Sport Coupé model, featuring a more powerful 697-cc engine good for around 40 horsepower. In total, this 700 is believed to be one of just 8213 examples made.

Originally sold new in Finland, the BMW is understood to have had multiple owners before undergoing a restoration in the 1990s that brought the car to its current condition.

The 700 also retains its numbers-matching engine and is accompanied by a “Birth Certificate” from BMW Classic.

Find this 1962 BMW 700 Sport Coupé up for auction from RM Sotheby’s on November 23 with an estimated value of $33,000-$55,000.

I saw race-ready version tearing up the track at the Put In Bay vintage race last year - such an obnoxious exhaust note... I absolutely loved it!  One of my favorite cars at the event.
