Go, have fun, don't worry about class.
Here's a little often-forgotten part of the SCCA Solo rule book. It's under 1.1.1:
In other words, if a region wants to have a historic/vintage/whatever class, assuming the SCCA safety rules are met, it can happen.
You say Safety rules are met••••••• and I shudder. Visions of Harness, rollcage, kill switch, fuel cell, fire system, On a car that has been in wheel to wheel races without any of that since 1976.
Ok it's been 20 years since the last tech but the car isn't one bit faster or one iota more dangerous.
Instead, reassure me that the guy checking the spoke tension on the wire wheels actually understands what's important? That he understand cars of this era often had actual wood steering wheels and they never spontaneously burst into flames.
In other words a little sensitivity to those of us who SCCA has put through their safety wars and left us bloody and bent.
I'm very sorry for the negative tone. I loved SCCA ( and still do appreciate their work) but dealt with the nonsense with humor and a good nature. Excuse me if I say, Stay off my lawn
There's room for some historical exceptions, but at the same time there's room for preventing unsafe practice on newer builds. Basically, there's a needle to be threaded about it.
My bugeye sprite didn't originally have seatbelts, but I'm a-ok with a lap belt being a requirement for autocrossing. Now, a 3 point shoulder belt? Hard to implement safely. That said, If I want to go nuts and swap in a turbo rotary and run slicks, yeah I should be required to do a roll bar and harnesses...
In reply to Apexcarver :
That attitude makes a lot of sense! I could really support that mentality. But how would SCCA IMPLEMENT THAT INTO A RULE BOOK ?
Then somehow convince tech inspectors to standardize that approach so people could go places and not have hassles?
Frenchy, I run my '73 TR6 in SCCA Autocross as often as I can. I was previously running in FSP (street prepared).
At the end of the last event, one of my friends that was running the event ran up as I was leaving and suggested that I move my car to HCS (Historic Classic Street) as I would have done much better in PAX overall in HCS than I did in FSP.
I looked when I got home and sure enough, I was 26th out of 32 on PAX in FSP, but would have been in 20th of 32 in HCS. I was just running on hard street tires at the time.
I'm going to go ahead and move it. There are roughly the same number of competitors in both, but I'll never beat any of the competitors in FSP (relatively newer CRX's, etc).
Really doing so is just a numbers game and makes no difference- I still need to work on the same things in the way I drive. But at least doing this puts me in with cars with the same technology.

I know there is an early MG that runs in HS in east TN with a friend of mine in his TR6. They have fun.

Something where my Stock MGTD with 54 horsepower and 2000+ pounds skinny tires. Can go and play without embarrassment?
HCS is a great playground. I've ran my '57 MGA there (or HS - when not available) for a couple years.
