It's basically a WWI aircraft engine. They are pretty strange engines.
I wonder how much gyroscopic effect it has.

There were aircraft (that I can't remember the name of) that basically did the same thing; propeller was mounted to the engine and the whole engine rotated. It was to get enough cooling air around everything to make the engine last.
