The Porsche 924 guys in the UK/Europe have already discovered and implemented such a solution. It's even been documented on the 924board.
BTW, if you dont use a smart controller that leverages a speed sensor then you'll miss out on a lot of the feeling/features of those columns. Most of the aftermarket controllers aren't doing this and it could be a better solution. There was a great site that documented how to properly wire (they are very sensitive to wiring length and resistance apparently) and control those columns. I'll see if I can find it.
Add lightness
Remove power steering
Enjoy beefy arms
Fight off raging female advances with new beefy arms.

Please and thank you.

What happens if chosen female tries to drive your car and has a hard time due? Yeah.
For a GT like a 944 or a 944 Turbo, power steering makes sense. A 924 being more of a simple and down to earth car might seem a bit silly to have it, but for autocross it could quite nice.
After driving a Ford Windstar with faulty power steering and getting my 91 Camaro pulled down the road with a tow rope and me steering it, I , and maybe others too, only need power steering for parking. I really don't like parking with manual steering, plus, you have to worry about hitting other cars in the parking lot. My arms didn't get noticeably beefy.

chosen female is never to be allowed behind the wheel of your car. have you ever seen what damage she does with her appliance?

Um, yeah I think you've mistaken me for someone who doesn't treat women as my equal instead of a household appliance.
Besides, if I've been out drinking, I'd prefer she drive me and the car home instead of leaving my car behind if I can avoid it.
Personally, the manual steering in my lightweight 924 isn't bad, but if I were building one for an endurance race or for autocross I'd add power steering, just to help the driver drive the car.
To each their own though.

Yeah... as a recently divorced man, I was kinda thinking along the lines of using the beefy arms to get laid, not find a life partner. She can walk home.

Simpsons did it.
(actually Pete did it... friggin' hipster, doing things before they were cool. Ask him about FC subframe swaps into FBs or rallycrossing RWD cars sometime)
Aren't those GM epas columns known for their lack of reliability?
......I'm not really feeling this. But I do admire the effort to transplant it into a classic.
