I've found one, a sedan. Straight body. Decent original paint that I expect will polish up pretty good. 107000 miles, tiny rust spot on roof. Oil level is right. No condensation under oil filler cap. Coolant is a little low. Runs & drives with no drama. A/C doesn't work. No maintainace records. I've know the owner for 15-20 years & he's always seemed trustworthy. He's fallen on hard times recently, thus the need to sell. Any reason why I shouldn't get it? Anything to be afraid of. I think this engine has a timing belt instead of chain so it'll probably need changing.

um, it's 150$. I read car- 150$ and knew it was worth it.
Did you say $150? If it runs... where is the risk?
In reply to Giant Purple Snorklewacker:
That's pretty much what I've been thinking.
What year? If it's a 1991 or earlier e30 chassis, the engine does have a timing belt; you always replace it right away unless you have proof the previous owner put one in recently. Also, there was a 325e (the eta economy version) but no 325a, unless you're maybe referring to an automatic transmission.
For $150, there's no risk at all. It may need some refreshing of suspension bushings and the like but you can't lose for that price.
I swear, y'all are gonna talk this old ex-E21 pilot into an E30 yet. At prices like these, there's just too much goodness in them to ignore. Hey, I can't see the outside from the seat anyway, right?
Do the belt as soon as you get it home, just in case. The M20's a a great little jewel of a six, but it's an interference engine.

Discovered it the hard way when I bent three in my 1979 323i.
In reply to M2Pilot:
In the time it took you to fire your computer up and post this, you could have bought it and started driving it home. I suggest you do that =)
No risk. You could scrap it for that much.
Paid for it this am. Will get it Thursday. May post pics if I can get my more technical literate younger relatives to help with that.

Holy crap, does your friend smoke crack? I ask because most of the people who need money so bad they will sell a car for $150 are the type of people who have already sold moms couch for $5 to get a rock.
Edit-meant to be funny but came across as an ass. Definitely buy the man a meal like mentioned in the next post if he is truly that down on his luck.
If the guy is that down on his luck, he's probably not eating out much. Pass the car off at an Outback Steakhouse and buy the man a steak.
I paid him more than he was asking,if it works out when we transfer the title, I'll buy him lunch. He's not way down on his luck. Lost his regular job but does OK as a wedding, etc. photographer on the side. And, Mr Joshua, it was funny.
