Gross versus net horsepower. Two different ways to talk about the same engine. Anything prior to 1974?  Was gross horsepower. Or Advertised horsepower.  
Net is how much horsepower it actually made in the car. With all the power robbing stuff still attached to it. A/C , water pump, oil pump( yes)  etc etc through the stock air cleaner, mufflers, etc etc. as the car actually ran.  
    Times recorded later on don't count.  NHRA rules for stock doesn't mean stock.  There are many things you can do and legally race in the stock class but they aren't from the factory.  So please don't be confused about a 1980's number that is different from an as tested number from 1968. 
     The simple fact is newer tends to be faster than even our beloved cars from our youth. 
    You have to be satisfied  with a 1968 L88 Corvette was faster than most other 1968 cars.
