...or will trade for a bass fishing boat as long as the boat isn't junk. LOL!!
This was an ad in our loca area. The 928 is decribed as "runs good", gold paint and with an auto transmission and the seller is serious about the "not junk" bass boat vs the 928.
Very sad because 928's were actually great touring GT's, even if nobody wants one now. The V8 engine was superb. But if you restore one you'll never get close to getting your money back. They had two major things going against them IMHO.
1) No race history
2) Not a 911
saw one in the junkyard today. It was all torn apart but the V8 was still there. It made me sad. I always wanted one of them when I was growing up. And who cares about resale value......I buy cars to drive them, not as an investment :)
Me and the guy with me discussed how cool it would be to pull the pop-up headlight assemblies and use them for pop-up rally lights on the rallycross e30 :)

Mrs. Oldtin has always had a thing for them. Looks like I'm in the market - but looking for an 85 or later...
That price seems really high.

Ah...a 928 in Black with BBS (either gold centered or solid silver) wheels....
My spoiled cousin had a new one in the late 80's. It was pretty badass. His daily routine involved starting it and then doing a huge burnout down his long driveway. I think it lasted a year on the first engine. What a waste.

Yeah, i dont really see how this is sad. Cheaper is better from my end, and like Irish said, i dont buy cars as an investment. In fact, i consider myself as usually 'the last stop before the crusher' so im looking for the cars that noone else WILL buy regardless of price.
Thats one reason ive never owned a porsche. There's always someone who wants one, and that keeps prices higher than they probably should be in most cases.
The car itself doesnt get worse just because the price goes down. Therefore, i usually treat prices going down as a very good thing. Unfortunately, over the last few years the bottom end of the market seems to have done the opposite and gone UP in price.
I drove an 87 s4 with a standard trans for a while. One of the top 2-3 cars on my all time list.
A friend of mine just got an early 80's 928 for 5k. It's bright yellow, has late 90's 911 wheels, and the speedometer doesn't work sometimes, but otherwise it runs great and he hasn't had any problems using it as a daily driver. seemed like a good price to me.
biggest drawback: cost of engine/trans.
Answer: LSx.
In reply to Jim Pettengill:
would it fit? If I remember right, the engine bay is quite narrow. Quite extremely narrow. How about a 2JZ?

LSx is way smaller than the 928 engine. A 2JZ would be more difficult to fit than a LSx. It is much taller, longer, and heavier than a LSx.
928 was the first Porsche I ever drove. I have a soft spot for them.
I never really liked them, but there is one that I see at PCA track days all the time and holy crap is it fast. Sounds good too.
one of the prettiest non-italian cars ever.
And an incredible road presence
I would LOVE to own one of those cars. But I'm very, very afraid of what it would cost to keep it moving.

Is he dyslexic? Sounds like somehow he confused the "9" with a "Z".
I'm with the guys who lusted after the 928 back in the day when you could buy one new. I'd entertain the notion of picking one up on the cheap, but I too am a bit leery of what it would take to keep one in running condition today. Anyone have some firsthand experience with commonly-needed repairs and the costs associated therewith? (I love using words like "therewith!")

Damn....this thread got me looking at Craigslist.
How about a Maserati Ghibli? Only asking $136000.

Make it a Merak or Bora and you got a deal.
I've been wanting a man trans 928 for a very long time.
When I started shopping for cars I found a euro dealer in charlotte with one, I did all the pre-paperwork to finance it, I just never followed through.
It's one of the might-have-beens that I didn't think about too much til now, so thanks for that

A friend told a story that his friend in Cali (circa '69-'70) traded his Ferrari GTO for a new Ghibli.

How to manage the fact that the Porshe is a transaxle at the back of the car? Is there a kit to work around this?
I understand that a clutch job on a 944 is reason to junk the car if you have to pay a mechanic. Can't imagine that a 928 would be better.
The 928 engine bay is actually quite big. Very, very big.
